The June 22 broadcast of Mnet’s “The Call” took collaborations to the next level!

SHINee’s Taemin, Gray and Loco, Eddy Kim, Suran, and Jung In were the latest singers to join the four pre-existing teams on the show.

“The Call” is a music variety show where singers send “love-calls” to guests they want to collaborate with. SHINee’s Taemin, Gray and Loco, Eddy Kim, Suran, and Jung In were the latest singers to join the four pre-existing teams on the show.

The first group to perform was Gummy, Ailee, and Jung In. Transformed into a 90s-style girl group, the three female singers belted out “Call My Name.” They captivated the audience with their self-written lyrics, distinct vocals, and overall “girl crush”-worthy performance. Gummy commented afterwards, “I had so much fun the whole time, from when we started practicing until the very end of the performance. We are satisfied.”

Rapper BewhY and Taemin were the next to take the stage. While they come from different musical backgrounds, the two same-aged stars showed chemistry and their careers with their “Pinocchio”-inspired performance. Both of them reflected on themselves through their art. Taemin explained, “I want to show my real self through music,” while BewhY revealed, “He broke the negative perceptions that rappers tend to have about idols for me.”

The largest group to perform on “The Call” yet, Gray and Loco joined Kim Jong Kook, Hwang Chi Yeol, and UV for a romantic stage. Dressed in suits, the six of them serenaded with “It’s Worth It” (literal translation). Reminiscent of the popular Philadelphia soul genre that was prominent in the 70s and 80s, the love song was produced by Gray himself.

Playing to their strengths, Shin Seung Hoon and Eddy Kim put on a lively performance of their disco funk song, “Super Star.” Despite their generational gap, the two singers bonded over their shared love for the guitar, which they highlighted in the song. While Shin Seung Hoon was not feeling well, it was almost impossible to tell with their upbeat performance.

The last to perform was Kim Bum Soo, who teamed up with Suran. The duo showcased “Groggy,” a new jack swing track. In charge of the overall performance, Kim Bum Soo went all in, even preparing a giant mirror ball and finding a famous 90s dance team to be their backup dancers. Suran oversaw the actual music directing, and the two of them delighted the audience with their nostalgic performance.

In the end, Kim Jong Kook, UV, Hwang Chi Yeol, Gray, and Loco won as “Best Couple,” which is the show’s term for the highest-rated team voted by the audience.
