Na Young Suk Talks About Low Ratings For “Little House In The Forest,” Plagiarism Controversy Of “Youn’s Kitchen,” And More
Na Young Suk shared his thoughts on his variety shows.
On June 27, producing director (PD) Na Young Suk attended the press conference for tvN’s “Grandpas Over Flowers Returns,” and talked about his past and upcoming programs.
He began, “We’re preparing to bring back ‘New Journey to the West‘ in the second half of this year. To be honest, I wanted to return more quickly, but it became delayed due to PD Shin Hyo Jung’s leg surgery. We’re going to start filming with the rascals soon. We’re planning to air existing programs instead of new projects in the second half of the year.”
Na Young Suk also commented on the Chinese program that was accused of plagiarizing tvN’s “Youn’s Kitchen.” He stated, “I don’t feel happy that another country is copying the format, but the flow of the trend is more important than plagiarism. I think the program that I created can create the needs of viewers in another country and that can possibly create added value for our country. In the end, the people who can satisfy their needs are our country’s creators.”
In April, the PD unveiled the documentary-style variety show “Little House in the Forest” where actors Park Shin Hye and So Ji Sub lived a minimalistic life in the woods and carried out missions. The show concluded with 1 percent in viewership ratings.
Na Young Suk said, “There was a time when I was exalted after the success of ‘Youn’s Kitchen’ and was too self-confident. This was four months ago.”
He continued, “In the case of ‘Little House in the Forest,’ it was a program where the staff painted the picture of what we wanted rather than satisfying the needs of the viewers. But, I still have no doubt in my mind that the documentary-style format is the direction of variety shows.”
The PD added, “I think it was too early. I was prepared for it somewhat, but it hurt when the viewership ratings came out. I felt so sorry to So Ji Sub and Park Shin Hye. It was a program that didn’t exist before, so I think I can use it as a mirror to try new programs in the future.”
“Grandpas Over Flowers Returns” will premiere on June 29 at 9:50 p.m. KST.
