Super Junior D&E On The Growth Of K-Pop + Finding Their Place In The Industry After Military

Super Junior D&E members Donghae and Eunhyuk discussed the growth of K-pop in a recent interview.

Donghae and Eunhyuk expressed excitement about their latest mini album that had been in the works since they were serving in the military.

Eunhyuk began with a shy laugh, “It’s embarrassing to do an interview like this. We came back as a unit for the first time in a while. We prepared for this album for a long time. Donghae and I matched up our breaks when we were in the military. We met up and talked about the album. We said we should continue with D&E’s unique colors while doing the music and performances that we wanted to do.”

Donghae said, “To be honest, our album was scheduled to be released in the winter, but the songs were good and we wanted to meet our fans sooner, so we insisted to our agency. That’s how we were able to release it at this time. I think it’ll be about two short weeks of promotions, but we’ll try to leave a strong impression.”

Donghae and Eunhyuk are now veterans in the industry in their 14th year since debut. Super Junior, who was one of first groups that experienced the rise of Hallyu, commented on watching the growth and change of this movement.

Eunhyuk said, “When I returned after being discharged from the military, Hallyu got so big to the point where it’s incomparable to how it was in the past. I liked that the scale got bigger, but more than anything, I was touched because it felt like a successful generational shift took place.”

He continued, “Seeing how Hallyu didn’t end with our generation but is continuing and growing, I feel proud that we played a role in it and that we came this far because we achieved something in the past. To be honest, we can’t always continue to be No. 1. It’s time for us to find a new path. That’s the way to do this for the long run.”

“I think Super Junior is always attempting new things,” added Donghae. “Recently, we are trying out the South American market. I want us to continue attempting to go for new markets and a variety of units. That is unrelated to age. If we have good content, good music, and good videos, then we can try new things at any time.”

Super Junior D&E released their second mini album “‘Bout You” and a title track of the same name on August 16.
