New Dramas Hold Their Own With Solid Premiere Viewership Ratings

With the autumn comes a whole slew of new dramas.

SBS’s, MBC’s, and JTBC’s new respective Monday-Tuesday evening dramas premiered on October 1.

SBS’s “Where Stars Land” features the lives of people who give it their all in their jobs at Incheon International Airport. Intelligent yet mysterious Lee Soo Yeon (Lee Je Hoon) and hard-working but accident-prone Han Yeo Reum (Chae Soo Bin) cross paths and help each other heal. According to Nielsen Korea, the drama came out on top among public broadcasting stations in its time slot with solid viewership ratings of 5.9 percent and 7.2 percent.

MBC’s “Bad Papa” followed in second with viewership ratings of 3.1 percent and 3.7 percent. Starring Jang Hyuk as the titular character, the drama is about Yoo Ji Chul, a former champion
boxer who loses all his career, glory, and family all at once. He makes the difficult decision to become a bad person in order to be a good father.

With its finale just around the corner, KBS2’s “Lovely Horribly” followed up with a viewership of 2.7 percent and 2.8 percent for its penultimate broadcast on October 1. Song Ji Hyo and Park Shi Hoo play Oh Eul Soon and Yoo Philip respectively, two people who are connected by a strange zero-sum fate in which one person’s happiness means the other’s misfortune.

Among cable dramas, tvN’s “100 Days My Prince” maintained its strong lead in its time slot and hit a new personal best viewership of 8.0 percent for its October 1 broadcast, with a peak at 9.4 percent. The historical romantic-comedy is about how crown prince Lee Yool (EXO’s D.O.) temporarily loses his memory and ends up in an atypical marriage to Hong Shim (Nam Ji Hyun) while living as Won Deuk.

For its premiere, JTBC’s “The Beauty Inside” recorded an average viewership of 2.9 percent. A remake of the popular film of the same name, the drama is centered around A-list actress Han Se Kye (Seo Hyun Jin), whose appearance peculiarly changes once a month for a week, and the seemingly perfect airline executive Seo Do Jae (Lee Min Ki), who actually suffers from prosopagnosia.

“Where Stars Land,” “Bad Papa,” and “Lovely Horribly” air every Monday and Tuesday at 10 p.m. KST, while “100 Days My Prince” and “The Beauty Inside” air at 9:30 p.m. KST.
