Fan Bing Bing Apologizes For Tax Evasion And Promises To Pay Fine

Chinese actress Fan Bing Bing has released an official letter of apology.

On October 3, Fan Bing Bing posted a letter of apology on her Weibo account, four months after she was suspected of tax evasion.

In the letter, she said, “I recently experienced pain and haughtiness that I had never experienced before. I’m reflecting on my mistakes and apologize to everyone. I will use all of my power to pay the fine. I’m reflecting on signing double contracts for the film ‘Big Bang’ (literal title) and evading taxes. As a public figure, I should’ve obeyed the law, but I didn’t.”

She continued, “The reason why I could succeed on the international stage is because of this nation and citizens. I feel a lot of fear and heavy responsibility about the mistake that I’ve made. I also disappointed my fans who loved and supported me. Once again, I want to apologize to society, my fans, and my colleagues. I’m sorry.”

It’s been revealed through outlets including Xinhua News Agency and China Central Television that Fan Bing Bing was fined 890 million yuan (approximately $123 million), which is four times the amount of her original evaded taxes, for penalty tax, additional tax, and other various penalties.

The Jiangsu tax bureau took into consideration that this was her first time getting caught evading taxes and that she has never been punished for failing to pay taxes in the past in deciding not to give Fan Bing Bing criminal punishment as long as she pays the penalty within the time limit.

Fan Bing Bing’s tax evasion controversy was first brought up in June by former CCTV host Cui Yongyuan. He claimed that during her special appearance in a film, Fan Bing Bing was paid 60 million yuan (approximately $8.7 million) for four days of work because she signed double contracts. The actress was then investigated by authorities and rumors begin to circulate after she was nowhere to be seen.
