Soyou Shares The Unexpected Way She Found Out About Her Stage Name
On October 15, Soyou made a guest appearance on the KBS Radio Cool FM show “Kim Seung Woo, Jang Hang Joon’s Mister Radio.”
During the show, DJ Kim Seung Woo said, “Is Soyou your real name? It’s very pretty.” Soyou replied that her real name was Kang Ji Hyun but that Soyou was a good stage name.
When DJ Jang Hang Joon asked if she used a stage name because she wanted to, Soyou answered, “No, my agency chose it for me. Before my debut, the agency asked me to write a list of stage names I wanted to use. I combined English and easy Korean to make a lot of interesting names, but they were all rejected.”
Soyou explained the meaning behind her stage name: to become a woman that people wanted to possess [‘soyou‘ is the word for possession in Korean].
She shared, “The agency said that they’d think it over, but I first found out about my stage name from the news. One day I saw an article with my photo on it. In the article, I was called ‘Soyou.’ I asked my agency about it and they said I was Soyou from now on.”
Jang Han Joon commented, “You must have been upset that it wasn’t the name you wanted” and Soyou answered, “Rather than being upset, I was just taken aback.”
Soyou is currently promoting her new solo album “Part.2 RE:FRESH” and title track “All Night.”
