Penomeco Talks About Working On EXO's "Tempo" + Chanyeol And Sehun's "We Young"

In a recent interview, singer-songwriter Penomeco talked about his experience working on some of EXO’s music.

Penomeco has had a busy year—after holding a solo concert in May, he emerged the final victor of Mnet’s singer-songwriter survival program “Breakers” in June. The singer has also released no less than three singles over the course of 2018.

On top of his own music, Penomeco has somehow found the time to write lyrics for other artists as well. He participated in writing the lyrics for EXO’s Chanyeol and Sehun‘s SM STATION track “We Young,” which was released in September, as well as the title track for EXO’s long-awaited November comeback, “Tempo.”

Penomeco remarked, “The songs were both great, so I had a lot of fun working on them. ‘Tempo’ was such a good song that I even wanted it for myself.”

He added “I monitored the EXO members’ performances, and when I saw them perform [the song] with the completed choreography, it felt so new. It was a really fascinating experience working [on ‘Tempo’].”

The singer went on to mention that it had been far easier writing lyrics for EXO his second time around. “When I first received the request [to write lyrics for] ‘We Young,’ I worried a lot about the image [of the song],” he recalled. “I watched EXO’s past performances and listened to their old songs, worrying over how I should go about [writing the lyrics]. When I was working on ‘Tempo,’ I already knew EXO’s vibe, so the writing process was somewhat easier.”

When asked about the royalties he had earned from the considerable success of “Tempo,” Penomeco replied, “[My royalties] haven’t been calculated yet, so I myself have no idea [how much I’ll earn].” However, he added with a smile, “Whenever I see [‘Tempo’] rise on the charts, I watch it with a smile of relief.”

Penomeco recently released his first mini album “Garden,” featuring the title track “No. 5,” on December 20.
