Every year, we’re blessed with a long list of breakout and memorable events that crown K-pop’s lengthy and glorious list of accomplishments. And 2018 is no different, as it graced us with some of the best musical moments brought to us specifically by the hottest girl groups of 2018!
Without further ado, here are eight best girl group achievements that made the headlines this year!
1. Celeb five’s unique formation
When Korea’s finest comediennes joined forces to debut as a K-pop group, we knew we were in for a fun ride! The members debuted with a captivating ’80s-inspired concept via their first single “I Wanna Be A Celeb,” which was a hot topic in the beginning of the year.
2. MAMAMOO’s massive digital impact
The vocal goddesses slayed throughout the entirety of 2018 with the launching of their four seasons project, leaving us in total awe with every hypnotizing release. Furthermore, “Starry Night” impressively topped the charts, earning them the title of Digital music queens.
3. Red Velvet’s performance in North Korea
Being the first girl group to perform in North Korea since Baby VOX in 2003, it’s needless to say that Red Velvet was the talk of the hour as their participation in this special concert was fervently welcomed and praised by their new audience, especially by Kim Jong Un who seemingly changed his schedule to be able to watch their performance.
4. BLACKPINK’s majestic records
One thing is sure, these ladies were not kidding when they said they would hit us with that “DDU-DU DDU-DU!” From earning the highest spot for a Korean female act on the Billboard Hot 100 to being the first K-pop girl group to enter United Kingdom’s Official Singles chart, BLACKPINK also dominated YouTube by breaking all the view records to date, with the MV currently being over 580 million views.
5. Girls’ Generation’s revival
With some of the original members not renewing their contracts, we were all afraid to possibly witness the end of one of the most elite K-pop girl groups. 6. (G)I-DLE’s legendary collaboration
Ever since they kickstarted their career last May, these fierce ladies kept blowing our minds. One of their noteworthy works is the popular collaboration “Pop/Stars” that members Jeon Soyeon and Miyeon took part in alongside artists Madison Beer and Jaira Burns under the name K/DA, which they performed during the opening ceremony of League of Legends’ 2018 World Championship Finals. The song topped Billboard’s World Digital Song Sales chart, and the MV itself surpassed 100M views a month after its release.
7. LOONA’s major win at 2018 MTV EMAs
For a Korean artist to take a trophy at a non-Korean award show is definitely a celebratory milestone! Sharing the nominations with a tough competition, LOONA made a name for themselves this year as they snatched the Best Korean Act Award at the MTV EMAs, further highlighting their worldwide influence and loyal international fans. 8. TWICE’s grand achievement in Japan
Unless you were living under a rock for the past year, you’d know that TWICE has been taking Japan by storm! Their Japanese single “Wake Me Up” was the first foreign female artist’s single to be certified double platinum, which earned them the Excellent Work Award at the 60th Japan Record Awards.
