Chungha Shares Her Advice For Idol Auditions + Hopes For I.O.I Reunion

In a recent interview and pictorial for The Star magazine, Chungha talked about her flourishing solo career and shared her hopes for the future.

The singer posed for the shoot in a variety of casual, dressed-down looks, highlighting the contrast between her onstage persona and her real-life personality. When asked to describe how she was different on and off stage, Chungha replied, “I’m completely different; it’s a 180-degree change. When I’m [performing] on stage, I express myself aggressively and boldly. But when I’m off stage, I’m calm and composed. I’m a very ordinary girl who is always tired and pestering my manager to buy me food everyday because I’m hungry.”

As for her chief role models, Chungha remarked, “There are too many artists [to name]. But one definite role model is my mother. I think she’s the strongest person in the world. My goal is to become strong like my mother.”

The singer also revealed that she is interested in branching out into different genres of music. “I want to try making either hip hop music or music with a reggae influence,” she said.

Chungha went on to talk about her project group I.O.I, which came together on the first season of Mnet’s “Produce 101” before eventually parting ways at the end of 2016.

“Whenever the opportunity arises, I want us to all come together and [perform] on stage as a group again at least once,” said Chungha. She went on to attest to the strength of the group’s bond, sharing, “Just by looking into each other’s eyes, we’re able to know what each of us is thinking.”

Chungha also shared some advice for those looking to audition for an idol agency. “You need three things—timing, skills, and luck—to fall in place together at the right time,” she said. “Never blame yourself, and whenever an opportunity comes your way, work hard and do your best.”

As for her advice for solo artists, Chungha remarked, “You need to be very aware of your own strengths and weaknesses. Not only that, but you need to know how to use those strengths to make up for your weaknesses.”

Finally, Chungha shared her hopes for the year ahead. “I want to work hard together with my staff,” she said, adding with a laugh, “and I want my mother to be healthy.”
