Kim Dong Han Names A Defining Moment In His Career + Talks About 2018 MAMA Performance And More
Kim Dong Han recently sat down for an interview with YTN News ahead of the Lunar New Year holiday, and talked about his career, idol friends, and more!
Kim Dong Han is one of many current successful male idols who competed on “Produce 101 Season 2” in 2017. When asked what his most memorable moment has been so far, Kim Dong Han mentioned a critical point from the show.
“The most memorable moment for me was the mid-show ranking announcement on ‘Produce 101 Season 2,'” he said. “I was chosen as No. 35, so I went in to the next round as No. 35. I think if I hadn’t been chosen then, I wouldn’t have been able to be in JBJ. If I hadn’t been able to be in JBJ, I wouldn’t have been able to be a solo singer, and I would still be a trainee.”
Kim Dong Han explained that while he was promoting with the project group JBJ, he built up the skills needed to be a solo singer. It hadn’t already been determined that he’d definitely debut as a solo artist, but he had the opportunity to do a solo cover performance of SHINee member Taemin’s “MOVE” while he was with JBJ. The head of his agency saw this and said he thought they should put him in the direction of preparing to be a solo artist.
Kim Dong Han is also a member if the “’98 line” of idols born in 1998 who appeared on “Produce 101 Season 2.”
“The ’98 line still stays in touch,” said Kim Dong Han. “We haven’t had time to all meet up, but when we have the chance I’ll try to make it happen. Keonhee and Hwanwoong in the group ONEUS are promoting now too, so we agreed to meet up when they’re done.” He added with a laugh, “Since I’m the senior artist, I’d better treat them to a meal.”
The idol also talked about his performance at the 2018 Mnet Asian Music Awards (MAMA), when he took on a vampire concept.
“I’ve always dreamed of dancing together at an awards show with a lot of dancers,” he said. “I danced with about 20 people at MAMA, and I did a lot of research about things like expressions and gestures. I’ve always been someone who loves MAMA and have never missed watching it, so getting to perform on the big stage as a solo artist was amazing and so great.”
When asked about his vampire concept, Kim Dong Han joked with a laugh, “I try to pull off sexy concepts because I can’t do ‘refreshing’ concepts.” He added that if he gets the chance, he’d like to try a werewolf concept in the future.
In December, Kim Dong Han performed his solo concerts “Day & Night” for his fans. He laughed as he said, “I prepared for it so hard that it was like my soul was going to leave my body. After I performed my song ‘Good Night Kiss,’ I sang Jun Hyosung’s ‘Good Night Kiss.’ Since the titles are the same, I thought it would be fun. Jun Hyosung hit ‘Like’ on a clip of that performance, which was so amazing.”
Kim Dong Han also talked a bit about plans for his next release. He shared that he’s trying to take part in the creation of many of his songs, as he’s done in the past, and said it seems he’ll be busy during the Lunar New Year holiday as well to prepare for his next album.
