Watch: SF9 And K-Tigers Team Up For A Patriotic Performance In Honor Of Independence Movement Day

SF9 put on a memorable performance on the March 1 special of KBS 2TV’s “Immortal Songs.”

March 1 or Samiljeol is Independence Movement Day in South Korea. It’s a national holiday that commemorates the day in 1919 when Korean nationalists publicly protested against Japanese colonial rule through thousands of demonstrations. It’s a day of reflection and remembrance for those who lost their lives fighting for Korean independence.

On the March 2 episode, prior to their performance, SF9 explained the reason behind their song selection. SF9’s leader Youngbin explained, “We chose Jung Soo Ra’s ‘Ah! Korea’ which is a representative song for the 1988 Seoul Olympics. It was the largest Olympics in the world at that time. Our country had suffered through the Korean War and people in the world may have thought that we were a poor country. But it became a great opportunity for Korea to make ourselves known for our teamwork. I was really proud.”

SF9’s Jaeyoon said, “I felt as if a wave of emotions hit me. It really made me feel like, ‘This is our country!'” SF9’s Rowoon added, ‘We’re collaborating with K-Tigers. They’re contributing a lot to spreading awareness about the greatness of our country. We’re also a group who’s spreading awareness about K-pop, so we prepared this in hopes of making our country well-known.”

After watching SF9 and K-Tigers’ performance of the patriotic tune, JK Kim Dong Wook commented, “The song gives off a strong emotion. The [K-Tigers] performance in the middle was shocking.” Singers Kim Joon Soo and Yoon Choong Il then filled the stage with their voices while singing “The Old Imperial City” (literal title) and “Beggar’s Song.”

After both performances, SF9’s Chani commented, “Thank you so much for loving the drama [‘SKY Castle‘]. SF9 also has many charms, so please find out about us as well.” In the end, Kim Joon Soo and Yoon Choong Il won with 387 points.
