Chen Talks About Being 1st EXO Member To Make Korean Solo Debut + How Other Members Showed Support

EXO’s Chen talked about his solo debut and how his groupmates reacted to his new songs.

On April 1, Chen held a music presentation showcase for his solo mini album “April, and a flower” at the SMTOWN Coex Artium. Fellow EXO member Xiumin was the MC for the event, and he said, “I saw him practice, and he practiced like crazy. He’s the first EXO member to make a [Korean] solo debut, so I’m looking forward to it.”

Explaining that the EXO members cheered him on, Chen shared, “I was filled with energy when everyone told me it was great. Whenever I release a song, whether it’s an OST or a solo track, I’m always curious about the members’ reactions. While preparing for this album, all of the members honestly told me which part they liked. That gave me courage when I was worried about the solo album.”

A total of six tracks—”Flower,” “Sorry Not Sorry,” “Love Words,” “I’ll Be There,” “Portrait of You”, and title track “Beautiful Goodbye“—will be included in the album, and Chen revealed that he had a difficult, but enjoyable time choosing which song to have as the title track.

About the recording process, he shared, “I worked on it while thinking of it as if I’m starting over from the beginning. I paid a lot of attention to the detailed expressions. I thought hard about my usual sound and singing style, and I took special care to convey the lyrics.”

Chen was feeling nervous as the first EXO member make a solo debut. He expressed, “I needed courage. I felt like I was lacking, but I took a courageous first step.”

Chen’s solo album “April, and a flower” will be released on April 1 at 6 p.m. KST, and an hour later, he will hold a special busking event called “Chen’s April Busking” that will be broadcasted live via Naver V Live.
