Celebrities Honor The Victims Of Sewol Ferry Disaster On Its 5th Anniversary
Many celebrities have posted on social media to commemorate the loss of hundreds of lives due to the Sewol Ferry Disaster in 2014.
On April 16 of that year, a passenger ferry traveling from Incheon to Jeju Island sank while carrying 476 people. 304 crew members and passengers died, and most of those lost were students of Danwon High School.
In honor of the fifth anniversary of this tragedy, memorial events were held at Ansan city in Gyeonggi province and at Jindo island in South Jeolla province. A concert was also held at Gwanghwamun plaza in Seoul.
Several celebrities took to their Instagram to mourn and remember the victims of the Sewol Ferry disaster.
Super Junior’s Yesung posted an image of a yellow origami boat along with the caption “I will not forget.”
Goo Hara posted the yellow ribbon image with a caption that reads, “Let’s never forget April 16, 2014. May my small actions cause a large miracle.”
Singer-songwriter Sunwoo Jung-A posted an image containing the date, location, and casualties of the Sewol Ferry disaster along with the caption “My heart skipped a beat when I saw saw today’s date on my phone after frantically working on a project. I pray even more deeply today for the ones left behind and those who passed away under unimaginably fearful and painful circumstances. I will never forget. Fifth anniversary of Sewol Ferry disaster.”
On April 15, Jeon Do Yeon, lead actress in the movie “Birthday” (literal translation), appeared in JTBC’s “News Room” (literal title) and spoke about her film as it is about the Sewol Ferry disaster. She shared, “Because the wounds are deep, I think there may be a lot of fear surrounding this movie. I also think it’s because it may hurt again [to watch the movie]. ‘Birthday’ is not a film meant to bring up the sad past and to be in pain again. The story of the victims and their families are also our stories. It’s a story every one is currently living, which is why I selected this film and hope that many people will watch it.”
Many more celebrities shared images of the yellow ribbon, with many including promises to never forget. See more below:
