The producers of SBS’s “Running Man” have made an official apology following the controversy surrounding their April 28 broadcast and its plagiarism of webtoon “Money Game.”

Near the beginning of the show’s latest broadcast on May 26, the producers included a caption saying, “We producers of ‘Running Man’ deeply apologize to writer Bae Jin Soo for applying the concept and story of webtoon ‘Money Game’ to episode 449 [of ‘Running Man’] without asking for his consent in advance. We will do our best to prevent this from happening again.”

In addition, the show’s production staff will remove all parts of the episode that are similar to “Money Game” on VOD streaming services.

Naver Webtoon had been negotiating with SBS as writer Bae Jin Soo’s representative. They stated, “[The removal of the content] was something [we] had strongly demanded. The more extensive the spread of the content after the broadcast, the bigger the original writer’s damages would have gotten, as he had not been properly compensated.”

Leader Kim Shin Bae of Naver Webtoon’s business department stated, “We are glad that we were able to peacefully reach an understanding with SBS. This kind of copyright infringement can happen to any writer, not just writer Bae Jin Soo, so we will continue to do our best to protect writers’ copyrights — the most fundamental right for writers.”

Writer Bae Jin Soo of “Money Game” also voiced his thoughts saying, “I think it’s meaningful that I received an official apology. I hope that there will be no further cases of webtoon content being used without permission when the writer’s blood and tears have gone into the creating the work.”
