Malicious Commenter Receives Sentence For Spreading False Rumor About Lee Seo Jin And Sunny

On October 18, netizen “A” who spread a rumor about Lee Seo Jin and Girls’ Generation’s Sunny received a six-month sentence.

The Daejeon District Court sentenced “A” to six months in prison which is suspended for two years. This means that “A” will be on probation for two years and will have to serve six months in prison if they violate the condition of the suspension during those two years. The court also additionally sentenced “A” to 80 hours of community service after finding them guilty of defamation.

The court stated, “[A] spread false information about celebrities’ personal lives on a website with over 1 million users. In light of the danger, we saw the necessity for severe punishment.”

The court added, “‘A’ has confessed to the crime and is self-reflecting. We decided on the sentence after taking into consideration that ‘A’ did not have any prior record.”

In October 2018, “A” wrote on the board of an online community, “Lee Seo Jin and Sunny were in a special relationship while filming a variety show. All of the staff also knew.”

At the time, Lee Seo Jin released a statement stating that this was false. He said, “It’s such nonsense that it isn’t worth mentioning.”
