The Return of Superman” chief producer (CP) Kang Bong Kyu talked about recruiting Gary and his son for the show!

On January 7, it was announced that Gary will be making a long-awaited return to television by appearing with his 26-month-old son Kang Ha Oh on the popular KBS family reality show “The Return of Superman.” The show follows celebrity dads as they take care of their children while their wives are away.

In a call with the news outlet OSEN on January 7, Kang Bong Kyu said, “I think Gary hasn’t been on television for about three years. It’s been quite a while since we asked him to come on the show, and after worrying about it for a while he readily accepted the opportunity to appear.”

Gary shared the news of his marriage to a non-celebrity in April 2017, and the couple welcomed their son to the world in November of that year. After leaving the variety show “Running Man” in late 2016, he has largely been on a break from the industry while focusing on his roles as a husband and father.

Kang Bong Kyu stated, “The process of casting him wasn’t easy. Well, no, casting is never easy. It’s something to be cautious about as the person has to show their children and their home.”

He went on to say that there was particular curiosity because of how Gary is a father who’s a hip hop artist and because it would be his first time on television in a while. He described how some people might have a prejudice that the images of “hip hop” and “father” don’t mix, so they were curious about how they’d go together, just as people were about Tablo and Yang Dong Geun when they were on the show in the past. “The biggest topic of curiosity is Gary’s son,” he added.

He shared that they’ve finished their first filming session, and the first broadcast date for the new family has not yet been determined.

The Return of Superman” airs every Sunday at 9:15 p.m. KST.
