Hwang Jung Eum Is A Mysterious And Unconventional Pub Owner In New Drama

JTBC’s new drama “Mystic Pop-Up Bar” released its first stills of Hwang Jung Eum!

Based on a popular webtoon, “Mystic Pop-Up Bar” tells the story of a mysterious pojangmacha (outdoor drinking establishment) run by an ill-tempered woman (Hwang Jung Eum), an innocent part-time employee (BTOB‘s Yook Sungjae), and a former afterlife detective (Choi Won Young) who visit customers in their dreams to help resolve their problems.

As her first drama in three years, Hwang Jung Eum will be taking on the role of Wol Joo, the owner of the pojangmacha. Wol Joo welcomes those who enter the warm pojangmacha with delicious snacks and drinks. Wearing an eye-catching hanbok (Korean traditional clothing) and binyeo (Korean traditional ornamental hairpin), she’s likely to shock first time customers with her rough speech and powerful aura. However, there’s no customer who doesn’t end up sharing their lifelong regrets with Wol Joo.

In addition to being the owner of the pojangmacha, Wol Joo is actually a counselor who doesn’t quite belong to either the world of the living or the world of the dead. To repent for her sins from her past life, Wol Joo has to resolve 100,000 people’s problems, but her success has come to a halt with 10 people remaining. While regretful customers will need Wol Joo’s counseling, Wol Joo will need those customers who have regretful stories to fulfill her quota.

The newly released stills reveal Wol Joo working at the pojangmacha. In order to improve her success in counseling, she personally tries to hand out her business card in the streets, but for some reason, she has difficulty snagging customers these days. Exhausted after waiting for customers, Wol Joo spends more days drinking alone than she does counseling. Viewers are curious to find out if Wol Joo, with her 500 years of experience, will be able to safely complete her task.

Gearing up for the drama’s premiere, the production team shared their hopes for Wol Joo’s counseling to provide viewers with second-hand satisfaction. They revealed, “Hwang Jung Eum has properly caught on to the main aspects of Wol Joo’s character, such as her unique hanbok fashion, refreshing speech, and a hundredfold relatable method of satisfying people’s regrets.” The production team also expressed their hopes for viewers to watch Hwang Jung Eum’s transform into Wol Joo for the drama’s premiere.

“Mystic Pop-Up Bar” premieres on May 20 at 9:30 p.m. KST. Check out a teaser for the drama here!
