Hyerim Explains Why She Chose To Go To School + Shows How To Balance Dating Life With Shin Min Chul On

Hyerim has shown more of both her dating and school life!

On the April 20 episode of MBC’s “Don’t Be Jealous,” Hyerim showed off her studious side as a current student at Hankuk University of Foreign Studies in the department of English interpretation and translation.

Due to COVID-19, Hyerim was listening to an online lecture, so her boyfriend Shin Min Chul remained in the living room watching taekwondo videos to keep from distracting her. He explained, “Hyerim is a student who has to study. In order to not become a distraction, I stay at her house quietly. This is our date.”

Taking a break from her lecture, Hyerim went out to the living room where Shin Min Chul surprised her with coffee and snacks.

While eating, Shin Min Chul asked Hyerim, “Why do you study so hard?” She answered, “That’s the same as asking you why you practice taekwondo so diligently,” helping him understand the answer to his own question.

Hyerim went on the explain, “When I was promoting in Wonder Girls, rather than my singing, dancing, or rapping skills, I always received more attention for my language ability. To everyone else, I could speak four languages and had a very smart image. However, I was only using the vocabulary of a middle school student.” She continued, “I didn’t like that only my packaging was extravagant. I thought that I wanted to work honorably, even if it wasn’t with Wonder Girls. That’s why I thought that I wanted to study starting with the basics under expert professors.”

After dropping Hyerim off at school to meet with her professor, Shin Min Chul headed to the gym. During her meeting, Hyerim’s professor spoke about how highly the school regarded attendance, but that she didn’t know Hyerim was a celebrity for over a year because she never missed class.

Hyerim further explained her decision to study, saying, “I lived overseas from when I was 2 years old to 14 years old. Since I learned Korean, English, Cantonese, and Mandarin at the same time, I was really overwhelmed by the various cultures. When people ask me, ‘What language are you best at?’ I feel very overwhelmed. Although I can speak four languages, it feels like I can’t do any one of them perfectly. Since I feel like I am lacking in language, I want to immerse myself more into these languages through translation.”

After her meeting, Hyerim headed to the gym to study while waiting for her boyfriend to finish practice. Despite the loud and chaotic atmosphere, Hyerim showed her dedication to her studies by rarely looking up from her book to watch Shin Min Chul’s impressive skills.

Although the two did not necessarily spend lots of one-on-one time together, viewers expressed envy at how comfortable and natural the 7-year-old couple appeared.
