Celebrities Commemorate 40th Anniversary Of Gwangju Uprising

On May 18, many celebrities posted on social media to remember the Gwangju Uprising.

The Gwangju Uprising of 1980 was a significant moment in South Korea’s struggle for democracy. Beginning on May 18, citizens of the city of Gwangju rose up in a mass protest against South Korea’s military dictator, with almost a quarter million people taking part. The uprising was brutally repressed by the military, and while official government numbers state that 200 people (mostly civilians) died in the unrest, citizens of Gwangju state the number was closer to 2,000 and many more are still missing.

On May 18 this year, actor Jung Woo Sung posted an image to mark the Gwangju Uprising’s 40th anniversary.

A fan of BTS also posted on the group’s social media platform WeVerse with the poster and wrote, “Our Hobi [J-Hope]’s hometown… Gwangju.” J-Hope responded to the post with an emoji of folded hands.

Singer Song Ga In posted on Instagram with an image that reads, “518 Gwangju Uprising Anniversary. We will never forget the sacrifice you made for democratization.” She added a folded hands emoji in the caption.
