Yubin Talks About Her New Single, Her Decision To Leave JYP To Start Her Own Agency, And More

In a new interview with Star Today, former Wonder Girls member Yubin — now CEO and artist of her own agency rrr Entertainment — spoke about why she left JYP Entertainment as well as her single “yaya (ME TIME).”

Talking about making the change from JYP Entertainment to her own agency, Yubin said, “As I learn things one by one, I’ve come to realize that I was at a really great agency. It was large and had a systematic foundation through which I received a lot of support. Learning things one by one now, it can be difficult, but it’s also fun, and I’ve received a lot of great advice from some great people.”

The CEO and artist revealed that she craved a different experience. “Of course I thought about moving to a different agency. But JYP was such a great place, and while other agencies would probably be nice too, I felt that working as an artist at an agency would ultimately be similar.”

More than anything, Yubin wanted to escape feelings of complacency. “What made me want to start my own agency was the feeling of complacency I had from being in a safe place where they do everything for you. I wanted to challenge myself even if it would difficult, so I just went for it. Of course, I also would like to just go to an agency, be cared for, and be comfortable, but if not now, I don’t think I would’ve been able to [start my own agency].”

On “yaya (ME TIME),” her first release since starting her new agency, Yubin said, “Because it’s the first time I’ve had a say in everything from the beginning to the end of the whole process, it’s fascinating, exciting, and different. I’m trying not to put too much stock in the result, and instead focus on having fun and being free. My goal is to keep doing this for a long time, and I want to make people happy.”

Yubin explained that her new song “yaya (ME TIME)” is, like her tracks “Lady” or “Silent Movie,” a representation of herself at that moment in time. “My way of approaching music hasn’t changed much. I try to incorporate the genres or concepts that I like at the time. ‘Lady,’ ‘Silent Movie,’ and ‘ME TIME’ are the songs that best express myself in each moment of my life.”

Yubin revealed that her fellow Wonder Girls members reacted to the song, saying that the song is just like her. When asked what Park Jin Young’s response to her single was, she said she has yet to hear anything. “I kind of feel like a student who wants to be complimented and acknowledged by her teacher. This time around, I wanted to surprise him, so I didn’t send him the song. I think I was able to release my own album because I’ve gotten so much feedback from him over the years.”
