Yoo Ah In And Park Shin Hye's Zombie Film

Yoo Ah In and Park Shin Hye’s zombie movie “#ALIVE” has hit a milestone at the box office!

According to the Korean Film Council’s records, “#ALIVE” reached 1,180,200 moviegoers as of June 28 at 5 p.m. KST. This means that the film surpassed 1 million moviegoers within five days of its release.

The film also made headlines shortly after its premiere when it recorded the highest number of first-day moviegoers achieved by any film since South Korea raised its alert level over the COVID-19 pandemic. Like in most countries around the world, movie theaters were effectively closed in South Korea for months, but have recently begun to open again.

The effective closure of movie theaters meant that “#ALIVE” is also the first film released after February 23 (the date that the threat alert level increased) to reach the 1 million moviegoer milestone. Moreover, it beat the films “Honest Candidate” (7 days) and “Closet” (11 days) in being the fastest to achieve the milestone. Both those previous films were released in February 2020.

“#ALIVE” is a survival thriller about the sudden outbreak of a mysterious illness that causes the infected to attack other people. As the disease grows out of control throughout Seoul, survivors are trapped alone in their apartments without access to cellular data, Wi-Fi, texting, or phone calls.
