SBS’s “The Penthouse” will be adjusting the ratings of certain episodes to be 19+.

“The Penthouse” is a new drama set in a luxury apartment building with 100 floors. The drama centers around the conflict between three women: Shim Soo Ryeon (Lee Ji Ah), born into wealth and the “queen” of the penthouse; Cheon Seo Jin (Kim So Yeon), the rich and arrogant “prima donna” of the penthouse; and Oh Yoon Hee (Eugene), who was born poor but strives to enter high society in order to ensure a better life for her daughter.

The October 26 premiere recorded strong ratings, with the drama surpassing 10 percent nationwide by only its second episode. However, many viewers expressed concern that some of the content in the first two episodes, such as school violence, should have been rated 19+, and they filed complaints to the Korea Communications Standards Commission (KCSC).

Viewers also took to various online communities to express their discomfort, including the Blue House National Petition Board, where one petitioner requested the implementation of a 19+ rating and inspection of the drama by the KCSC. The petitioner complained that the content of the drama could be stressful or “provoke ‘imitation crimes’ in growing young adults.”

SBS responded by announcing that after internal discussions, they would be adjusting the rating of the drama’s upcoming fourth episode, which airs on November 3, to a 19+ rating. The third episode, which airs the day prior, will be kept at its regular 15+ rating. Moving forward, the network will adjust the ratings as they see fit.
