A Thousand Years Of Devotion: 5 Reasons To Watch C-Drama

Starring Yuan Bing Yan (“The Mystic Nine,” “Ever Night“) and Cheng Yi (“The Lost Tomb 2,” “The Promise of Chang’An“), “Love and Redemption” is an epic love story about Xuan Ji, a young woman born without her six senses, and Si Feng, a young man cursed never to fall in love. This drama was one of the biggest successes of the year. Here are just five reasons why you should check out this excellent addition to the Xianxia genre!

Warning: minor spoilers for the drama below.

Top tier acting

With 10 lifetimes and a plethora of heart-wrenching emotions, both Cheng Yi and Yuan Bing Yan have plenty of character development to portray, and they never disappoint. But while both leads are incredible, the truth is that every single actor manages to embody their character through a wide array of expressions that are uniquely their own. Actor Bai Shu, among others, really stands out as the cantankerous Flying Snake, Teng She. Every one of his scenes brings some much-needed hilarity into the mix.

Good production value

C-drama connoisseurs know that special effects are often of… questionable quality, especially when it comes to Xianxia and Wuxia dramas, which feature many legendary creatures, mythical places, and magical techniques. “Love and Redemption” puts a lot of effort into its CGI, and it really shows, especially when combined with some particularly epic music. It features some of the best fight scenes ever seen in Dramaland.

The cutest couple

It may be a struggle for them (and for us) to get there, but Si Feng (Cheng Yi) and Xuan Ji’s (Yuan Bing Yan) loving moments will leave you melting in your seat. Whether it’s Si Feng’s playful disposition or Xuan Ji’s sunny smile, be ready to coo at one of the cutest drama couples this year. They love each other so much, you just can’t help but root for them and yell at the other characters who are trying to keep them apart. Leave them alone, people! They deserve to be happy together!

Badassery to the max

If you’re looking for a strong female protagonist with a lot of growth, “Love and Redemption” is definitely for you. Over the course of the show, Xuan Ji goes through a lot and grows from being a gentle, carefree girl into a strong young woman. Even better, she’s never afraid of standing up for herself, and more importantly, her friends. And she doesn’t let her seniors order her around if she thinks they’re in the wrong, which is a precious and still too rare characteristic for a female protagonist to have.

Si Feng

Cheng Yi does an incredible job portraying Si Feng, the male lead of “Love and Redemption.” His acting talent truly shines in every situation. But on top of this, his character is also the best man in the world. Si Feng is devoted, loyal, smart, playful, and everything else you may want. Simply put, it’s impossible not to adore him, especially when he serves some long-needed, very satisfying tea regarding men and their expectations of women.

“If you want to kill someone because she didn’t give you the answer you wanted, no one will love you, and you don’t deserve love.”

With an elaborate storyline, many interesting characters and some of the most beautiful production value, “Love and Redemption” is a captivating addition to the Xianxia genre.
