Kim Young Dae Talks About His Character In "The Penthouse" And Relationships With The Cast
Kim Young Dae talked about acting in SBS’s “The Penthouse”!
In the hit Monday-Tuesday drama “The Penthouse,” Kim Young Dae plays Joo Seok Hoon, a confused adolescent who does all he can to protect his twin sister. In the second half of the drama, Joo Seok Hoon is drawn to Bae Ro Na (Kim Hyun Soo), creating an interesting romance story which has been popular with the viewers.
In a recent interview, Kim Young Dae talked about the differences between his role in “Extraordinary You” and “The Penthouse.” He revealed that after “Extraordinary You,” many people in their teens recognized him and called him Oh Nam Joo, while these days, people of all ages recognize him and call him Seok Hoon. He added, “Oh Nam Joo has a slightly brighter narrative than Joo Seok Hoon, and I acted as Joo Seok Hoon while thinking of him as a character who received a lot of dark influences from his father Joo Dan Tae (Uhm Ki Joon).”
On the drama’s popularity, Kim Young Dae shared, “I expected the drama to receive a lot of interest, but I didn’t know we would receive so much love to this extent.”
While acting as Joo Seok Hoon, Kim Young Dae revealed that he focused most on his character’s relationship with others, changing his behavior to match who he was. He thought the way his characters felt differed depending on if Joo Seok Hoon was with his father, mother, or younger sister.
Kim Young Dae elaborated, “I was grateful to both Uhm Ki Joon and Lee Ji Ah for creating such a good filming set. They were always considerate of me first, and they gave me a lot of acting advice. There’s a scene in which Joo Seok Hoon becomes influenced by his father and unknowingly follows his father’s way of speech, and I contacted Uhm Ki Joon about that scene. I can’t express how grateful I am that Uhm Ki Joon made time for me and taught me in detail even though he was really busy preparing for a play at that time.”
The actor also shared that he focused on Joo Seok Hoon’s emotional change while portraying his romance with Bae Ro Na, adding how the change affected the way he treated his sister. He added, “His fixed mindset that he has to be perfect to match his father’s standards is starting to break slightly. I’m close to Hyun Soo in person too. It was awkward at first, but our personalities match well, so we quickly became close.”
Kim Young Dae shared that “The Penthouse” will continue to captivate viewers with shocking twists and asked viewers to keep watching until the drama’s conclusion. He added, “I sincerely thank everyone who has loved ‘The Penthouse,’ and I’ll continue to show a good side of me in the future.” He also asked viewers to stay safe and healthy to greet the new year.
Currently, Kim Young Dae is starring in both SBS’s Monday-Tuesday drama “The Penthouse” and KBS2’s Wednesday-Thursday drama “Cheat on Me If You Can.”
