"The Penthouse" Star Kim Young Dae Dishes On The False Assumption People Make About Him, The Gift He Wants For Valentine's Day, And More

In a recent interview and pictorial for The Star magazine, Kim Young Dae talked about his hit drama “The Penthouse” and more!

In keeping with the theme of his pictorial—Valentine’s Day—the interview began with a question about what gift the actor hoped to receive on the upcoming holiday. He responded by revealing, “I’d like to be gifted cologne.”

Kim Young Dae is currently starring in SBS’s wildly popular drama “The Penthouse” as Joo Seok Hoon, the son of real estate tycoon Joo Dan Te (played by Uhm Ki Joon).

When asked which scene from the drama he had found most memorable, Kim Young Dae replied, “There’s a scene in the final episode of Season 1 where Seok Hoon and Seok Kyung cry because their mother has passed away. Seok Kyung is sobbing pitifully, and I also felt really sad.”

He added, “I really empathized a lot with Seok Hoon in that scene.”

The next question asked Kim Young Dae to choose between the characters of Joo Seok Kyung, his twin sister in the drama, and Bae Ro Na, his love interest. The actor mused, “Family? Or love? Personally, I think that Seok Hoon’s character would choose Ro Na.”

Kim Young Dae went on to explain, “Although he has always felt like he needs to protect Seok Kyung, I think that the center of gravity in Seok Hoon’s life changed after the arrival of Ro Na’s character.”

Kim Young Dae also spoke about his passion for acting and how he’s constantly pondering ways to improve.

“I worry about how I can make viewers relate to my character [in any given project] and also what kind of charms I can show,” he shared. “I’m working hard to improve and show more maturity as an actor. Even characters that seem similar to one another are certain to have different charms. I want to highlight those kinds of key points in detail.”

Later, Kim Young Dae talked about his real-life personality and the mistaken first impression that people often have of him.

“Everyone thinks at first that I’m the type who wouldn’t talk much and has an aloof personality, but I’m not like that all,” said the actor. “I’m very talkative, and I have a fun and easygoing personality.”

Finally, when asked to name his goals for 2021, Kim Young Dae replied, “Rather than any grand goals, I want to always do my best at the work I’ve been given, without any regrets. My goal is to have people watch my acting and think, ‘That kid’s good.'”
