“Joseon Exorcist” is a fantasy exorcism drama that the fierce battle to protect the people of Joseon against evil spirits who are drawn to human ambition and greed. During his patrol in the northern regions, Lee Bang Won (later King Taejong) came across an evil spirit from the West. Although King Taejong sealed the spirit away, it was resurrected in the Joseon kingdom due to human greed and desire.

Ahead of the drama’s premiere on March 22, SBS released a six-minute highlight teaser that previews the major conflicts in the show. The highlight teaser shows the frightening abilities of the saengsi, which are human bodies possessed by evil spirits. The saengsi suck the blood of humans, turning the victims into saengsi as well. Prince Chungnyeong (Jang Dong Yoon) is given an important mission: bring back a priest from the West to exorcise the spirits.

Meanwhile, Taejong’s youngest son, Prince Gangyeong (Moon Woo Jin), is attacked by the saengsi and locked up to prevent anyone from knowing he has been bitten. Taejong (Kam Woo Sung) blows up in fury at Prince Yangnyeong (Park Sung Hoon) for not fulfilling his duties and protecting his brother, while Prince Yangnyeong reminds his father of his place in the line of succession. Prince Chungnyeong also finds himself in danger due to an attack from the saengsi, but he is rescued by a traveling troupe of entertainers with surprising abilities (Kim Dong Jun, Geum Sae Rok, and more).

The teaser also highlights King Taejong’s secret: that he had been the one to first seal the spirit away decades ago. This spirit is the demon Azazel, who can control minds and bodies and cultivates the darkness and greed in human souls. Desperate to save his youngest son, Taejong heads out with the boy to meet Chungnyeong and the priest as fast as possible. However, Han Jung Heon (Jeon Gook Hwan) uses this to stoke fear in Prince Yangnyeong that his brother might usurp him in the line of succession.

Prince Yangnyeong complains that his father has always been driving walls between him and his brothers, and Eo Ri (Lee Yoo Bi) comforts him, saying that he will be different from his father when he is king. Prince Yangnyeong promises her that he will protect the ones he loves, but when both he and his mother the queen (Seo Young Hee) are attacked by saengsi, he is determined to find the origin of the saengsi in Joseon and make them pay.

Finally, King Taejong and Prince Chungnyeong clash over their different beliefs. Inspired by the priest Father John, Prince Chungnyeong believes that the spirits can be exorcised while leaving their loved ones alive, but King Taejong is determined on blood at the price of saving the kingdom.
