MAMAMOO’s Hwasa And Wheein Visit Their Old Dorm And Talk About How They Became Friends On “Come Back Home”

KBS2’s new variety show “Come Back Home” featured MAMAMOO’s Hwasa and Wheein as its first guests!

“Come Back Home” is a new variety show where the MCs Yoo Jae Suk, Lee Young Ji, and Lee Yong Jin join stars as they visit the places they lived when they first came to Seoul and encourage the youth who are currently living there and pursuing their dreams.

Hwasa and Wheein first started living in Seoul in 2011 at a rooftop house in neighborhood of Sadang. Hwasa explained, “There were a lot of us in the house. It was four people living there, and because we split the utility bills, we used all the electricity we wanted.”

The two members reminisced about the neighborhood. Most of their memories had to with food, and Wheein shared, “I was called a pig for eating a lot using the company card.” Hwasa added, “She told me earlier about a place she used to cry at while jumping rope,” and Wheein explained, “There’s a big clock at a playground I often went to. I did 3000 jump ropes while looking at that clock and cried on my way home.”

As they got closer to their old dorm, Hwasa said, “It’s amazing. I got goosebumps. It almost looks the same as it did back then.” Hwasa and Wheein pointed at the building they thought was their old dorm, but it turned out that they were wrong. Yoo Jae Suk commented, “How could you not know where you lived?” and took them to the right place.

When they finally arrived at the rooftop house, Hwasa and Wheein expressed how exciting and strange it felt to be back after so long. Hwasa shared, “At the time, this rooftop felt so vast to me. I was so happy to have a rooftop like this, but now it feels very small. I guess I’ve just grown that much.”

The person living in the house currently was a 34-year-old woman named Choi Mi So. Wheein asked if there are still a lot of insects in the house, revealing, “I have anger towards cockroaches. I always killed them. I swore I would annihilate them.”

The MCs decided that they should do the things that Wheein and Hwasa most wanted to do at their old dorm. Wheein shared that she wanted to eat lots of beef because the only opportunity to eat beef at the time was through dinners with the company staff. They also revealed that they often played Go Stop, a Korean card game.

Hearing MAMAMOO’s old stories, Yoo Jae Suk also shared his own stories from the early days of his career. “I had no income, but I didn’t do any part-time jobs either. I just complained about not being cast in anything. The appearance fee at the time was 64,000 won [approximately $57]. I played the role of a Joseon era soldier, but it was only once a week. It was hard to be cast in the role all four times, so I did it about twice a month and made 120,000 won [approximately $106]. So I always relied on my parents.”

Hwasa commented that she also used to call her parents when she was running out of money, and Wheein added, “I only bought milk from the convenience store.”

The two MAMAMOO members then shared their first impressions of each other. As former middle school classmates, they are known to be long-time best friends, but it turns out that they did not click from the beginning. Wheein said, “I really didn’t want to be friends with her. We were in the same class, and she just started singing even though no one asked her to. I thought I’d never become friends with her. But during break time, she said she wanted to be friends with me. So I just agreed to it.” Asked why she sang on her own back then, Hwasa explained, “My desire to achieve my dreams was very strong. I wanted to dominate.”

A week later, Wheein and Hwasa returned to see the house that was completely redesigned by “Come Back Home.” They were as thrilled as Choi Mi So about the new design, and Wheein gave Choi Mi So a self-made jewelry box as a gift.
