Youn Yuh Jung Wins Trophy At 27th Screen Actor Guild Awards For Supporting Role In “Minari”

Youn Yuh Jung has received an award for her shining performance in the film “Minari”!

Previously, Youn Yuh Jung, Steven Yeun and the film “Minari” were nominated for the 27th Screen Actor Guild (SAG) awards. On April 4, the 27th SAG Awards took place. Youn Yuh Jung received an award for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Supporting Role.

This marks the first time that a Korean actor was nominated and received an award for a Best Supporting Actress award at the SAG Awards. The other actresses nominated in this category were Maria Bakalova (“Borat Subsequent Moviefilm”), Glenn Close (“Hillbilly Elegy”), Olivia Colman (“The Father”), and Helena Zengel (“News of the World”).

In her acceptance speech, Youn Yuh Jung shares in English, “I don’t know how to describe my feelings. I’ve been recognized by Westerners. It’s a very very big honor, especially [since it’s] by my actor fellows who chose me as a supporting actress.” She adds, “I don’t know, am I saying this right? My English is not perfect.” After she receives affirmation from the other nominees that she’s doing perfect, Youn Yuh Jung continues, “I’m very pleased and happy. Thank you.” The actress gets emotional as she thanks everyone including the other nominees.

Based on the Korean-American director Lee Isaac Chung’s experiences, “Minari” is about a family of South Korean immigrants making a new life in rural America in the 1980s. The cast members recently made Oscars history when the film earned six nominations for the 93rd Academy Awards, which is scheduled to be held on April 25.

Congratulations to Youn Yuh Jung!
