Lee Do Hyun Talks About Working With Go Min Si And Oh Man Seok, Historical Setting Of “Youth Of May,” And More

Lee Do Hyun recently gave an interview on the end of his drama “Youth of May.”

“Youth of May” is a romance drama about the fateful meeting of medical student Hwang Hee Tae (Lee Do Hyun) and nurse Kim Myung Hee (Go Min Si), who fall in love amid the whirlwind events of May 1980, a historically significant time period in South Korea.

Lee Do Hyun said, “First of all, I’m relieved that we were able to finish filming safely. It was an honor to work with such a great director, writer, production crew, and co-stars, who helped me stay deeply immersed in my role from the start of filming prep to the end of filming.”

He continued, “The most enjoyable but also the most difficult part was in playing a young man who could have realistically lived during that period in 1980. When I was preparing for the drama and during filming, I often thought, ‘What would I have done in 1980?’ I also found a thread of connection between those times and now. I realized anew, ‘Sharing love is something that’s the same then as it is now.’ Things aren’t all different just because the times and situation have changed.”

In the drama, Lee Do Hyun stars opposite Go Min Si, who plays his love interest, and Oh Man Seok, who plays his father. Lee Do Hyun had previously worked with Go Min Si in the Netflix series “Sweet Home,” where they played brother and sister. Lee Do Hyun said, “I was able to act comfortably on set because of Go Min Si. We’re the same age in real life, and we’d worked together before, so we were able to have comfortable and detailed conversations about scenes.”

He added, “It was an honor to work with Oh Man Seok. He’s a senior actor whom I respect a lot, so I was really happy to be working with him. I thought that he would be the type to set the vibe right away on set, but even though he was frightening and sharp as soon as the cameras rolled, he was always warm and friendly on set. I felt like I could trust him and follow where he led.”

About the praise he garnered for his performance, he said, “I’m grateful even just for people to know my name, so I was moved when people started attaching affectionate nicknames to me as well. There’s something that I’d always wanted to hear: ‘an actor you can trust to watch.’ I want to work hard and become an actor that people can trust to watch a project just by hearing that I am in it.”

He shared, “‘Youth of May’ is a project that taught me that ‘youth’ has no age. No matter how old or young you are, ‘youth’ is the moment that you’re in right now. I think I’ll think about Hee Tae whenever I’m having a hard time. He embodies for me the message, ‘You’re doing well right now. You’re living a good life. And you can do even better.'”
