Jang Ki Yong Talks About Chemistry With His Co-Stars On "My Roommate Is A Gumiho," Tackling The Fantasy Genre, And More

Actor Jang Ki Yong recently participated in an interview to talk about the end of his tvN drama “My Roommate Is a Gumiho.”

“My Roommate Is a Gumiho” is a fantasy romantic comedy drama about a 999-year-old male gumiho (Jang Ki Yong) and a 22-year-old college student (Hyeri) who move in together after she accidentally swallows the magical bead that would have made him human.

Jang Ki Yong said, “We filmed for about six months and I don’t know where the time went. This is the first time that I’ve laughed so much from start to finish while working on a project. The energy of the director, writer, cast, and crew was amazing, and because of that energy, I was able to have fun acting on set. It feels like I went on a cool trip with some amazing people. Since this project means so much to me, I hope that everyone remembers it as a project full of laughter and happiness as well.”

He shared, “The cast got very close in real life as well. I’d worked with Hyeri on a project before, and we had so many scenes together in the drama that we quickly got comfortable with each other. Kang Han Na, Kim Do Wan, Bae In Hyuk, and Park Kyung Hye are all around the same age as me, so we were able to tease each other and rely on each other. The director was the type to approach the actors comfortably, so we were always laughing on set.”

“There are a lot of CGI effects in the drama, so I was curious about how some of them would turn out,” Jang Ki Yong continued. “But it was fun and interesting. I also liked the scenes in which I would bicker with Yang Hye Sun [Kang Han Na] about correcting her on the words ‘pearl’ and ‘fox.’ I think the contrast between Hye Sun’s clumsiness and Woo Yeo’s sternness was funny.”

About taking on the role of a gumiho, a mythological creature, he said, “Woo Yeo wasn’t an easy character to play. There is no such thing as a gumiho, so I had to use more imagination than usual in thinking about what he was like. I asked the director a lot of questions on set, and I read the script several times trying to understand him. It was a difficult but interesting process of trying to make a gumiho that was unique to myself.”

The actor shared that he had enjoyed filming the flashback scenes of Shin Woo Yeo’s life. “I liked wearing hanbok!” he said. “I’d wanted to do a historical drama for a while, and this was the first time that I’d worn hanbok during a project. People told me that it suited me, and I felt good. There is also a brief scene of Woo Yeo in a formal shirt and glasses, and I liked trying out that new style as well.”

Jang Ki Yong concluded, “This was my first time taking on the fantasy rom-com genre, so I’m glad people looked on it kindly. There aren’t a lot of chances for us to meet face-to-face these days, but the fans’ support always gives us strength. I’m working on ways to communicate with my fans more, and working hard on my next project, so please stay tuned.”
