Mnet Responds To Reports Of 2021 MAMA Being Held In Hong Kong
Mnet has spoken up about reports that Hong Kong will be the host location of the 2021 Mnet Asian Music Awards (hereafter MAMA).
On July 20, Ilgan Sports reported that Mnet is discussing the possibility of holding the 2021 MAMA in Hong Kong this December. Mnet has reportedly mentioned this possibility to some agencies and asked them to keep it a secret for now as it is not confirmed yet.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, last year’s MAMA was held online. According to rumors, Mnet is considering the option to hold this year’s MAMA outside Korea because it is now possible for people to get vaccinated. Ilgan Sports stated that most music industry sources were skeptical about the decision as it was unclear who would take responsibility if someone ended up contracting COVID-19 at the awards ceremony.
A source from Mnet stated to Sports Donga, “The host location of the 2021 MAMA is still undecided. We will prioritize the health of the artist and staff when deciding on the location.”
Since 2010, MAMA has often been held in locations outside Korea. From 2012 to 2015, the ceremony was held in Hong Kong, and in 2017 and 2018, it was held in three countries including Hong Kong. The 2019 MAMA could not be held in Hong Kong due to the protests going on at the time.
