BTS’s “Butter” and “Permission to Dance” have switched places again at No. 1 on Billboard’s Hot 100!

On July 26 local time, Billboard announced that BTS’s smash hit “Butter” had re-taken the No. 1 spot on the Hot 100, Billboard’s famous weekly ranking of the most popular songs in the United States.

Last week, BTS made history by replacing themselves at No. 1 on the Hot 100 when their new single “Permission to Dance” overtook “Butter,” which had held the top position for seven straight weeks. This week marks the second “baton touch” for the group as “Butter” rises again to take the No. 1 position back from “Permission to Dance.”

This gives BTS the interesting new record of being the first-ever act to replace itself at No. 1 on the Hot 100 with a new leader and then send the previous No. 1 back to the top with no other acts holding the top spot in between.

This week marks the eighth total (non-consecutive) week that “Butter” has topped the Hot 100, which means that it is now tied with Olivia Rodrigo’s “Drivers License” for the longest-running No. 1 song of 2021 so far.

According to Billboard, “Butter” showed the strongest resurgence in the sales portion of the tracking week, up by 132 percent to 115,600 downloads sold compared to last week’s 49,800. “Permission to Dance,” which is ranked No. 7 this week, saw its sales fall by 39 percent from 140,100 downloads sold last week to 85,000 this week. “Butter” also saw a 2 percent increase in radio airplay audience impressions and ranked No. 21 on the Radio Songs chart and No. 40 on the Streaming Songs chart. “Butter” also replaced “Permission to Dance” on the Digital Song Sales chart. Despite the change in rankings, both “Butter” and “Permission to Dance” were the top two best-selling songs of the week in the United States.

Congratulations again to BTS and ARMY!
