“Sinkhole” has achieved a meaningful milestone at the box office!

“Sinkhole” is a new comedy disaster movie about a man who saves up for 11 years to buy his own house, only to have it collapse into a massive sinkhole within a minute. It stars Kim Sung Kyun, Cha Seung Won, Lee Kwang Soo, and Kim Hye Joon.

According to the Korean Film Council, “Sinkhole” hit 1,000,792 moviegoers on the morning of August 16. The movie was released on August 11, meaning that it achieved 1 million moviegoers in just six days. This is the fastest record achieved by any Korean movie of 2021.

It is also just the second Korean movie of 2021 to surpass 1 million moviegoers at the box office, after “Escape From Mogadishu” became the first earlier this month. These are particularly impressive accomplishments for the Korean film industry as the Seoul metropolitan area is currently under the strictest level of social distancing guidelines.

“Sinkhole” opened to 14,700 moviegoers, surpassing “Escape to Mogadishu,” and its box office sales were bolstered by good word-of-mouth as well as the extended holiday due to the National Liberation Day of Korea (August 15).

Congratulations to “Sinkhole” and its cast and crew!
