2021 The Fact Music Awards Apologizes For Plagiarism Issues Around One Of The Performances

The organizing committee of the 2021 The Fact Music Awards (2021 TMA) has issued a statement regarding accusations of plagiarism around one of the performances at the awards show.

2021 TMA took place on October 2, hosted by Shin Dong Hyup, Girls’ Generation’s Seohyun, and Boom, with a lineup that included BTS, SEVENTEEN, ITZY, Stray Kids, ATEEZ, THE BOYZ, Super Junior, Oh My Girl, Brave Girls, ENHYPEN, ASTRO, STAYC, Hwang Chi Yeol, Kang Daniel, CRAVITY, Weeekly, and Lim Young Woong.

During ASTRO’s stage, member Moonbin gave a passionate solo performance with the concept of a marionette doll. However, some people noticed that the performance had a similar stage design, concept, and background music as Ohno Satoshi’s performance from Japanese boy band Arashi’s 2017-2018 Live Tour Untitled.

On October 4, the 2021 TMA organizing committee stated:

There has been criticism that ASTRO’s Moonbin’s solo performance resembled a past performance by the Japanese group Arashi. This was the clear fault of the production company, who did not thoroughly check the content during the content planning stage.

We have confirmed that the performance was planned by the directing team at Box Media, who was responsible for producing and directing the entire awards show. The team came up with the performance to bring out the best of ASTRO’s Moonbin on stage and suggested to the artist that he perform it.

The organizing committee of 2021 TMA and Box Media take responsibility for this mistake and will be more careful about our production process in future to avoid these kinds of unpleasant incidents.

ASTRO won an Artist of the Year (Bonsang) award at the 2021 The Fact Music Awards.
