As tvN’s “Hometown Cha-Cha-Cha” heads into its finale, let’s take a look back at how Kim Seon Ho and Shin Min Ah’s onscreen romance blossomed!

A remake of the film “Mr. Hong,” “Hometown Cha-Cha-Cha” is a romantic comedy starring Shin Min Ah as Yoon Hye Jin, a dentist who moves from Seoul to the seaside village of Gongjin, and Kim Seon Ho as Hong Doo Shik, an odd-job expert who helps everyone around town.

Stage 1: The First Seeds of Chemistry

Every good rom-com starts with an impressionable meet-cute! In Yoon Hye Jin’s case, she was visiting the town of Gongjin to commemorate her late mother’s birthday when her shoes were washed away by the tide. One of the shoes washed up on Hong Doo Shik’s surfboard, kicking off their relationship. Initially, she is put off by his brusque attitude, his informal speech, and the way he keeps popping up around town, while he is annoyed by her Seoulite tendencies.

Eventually, Yoon Hye Jin thaws out to reveal her soft side and warm heart to the residents of Gongjin, including Hong Doo Shik. The first major change in their relationship comes when they share drinks together and Yoon Hye Jin kisses him, which she immediately regrets the next day. The two agree to move past it and be friends, but their feelings continued to develop under the surface.

Stage 2: Potential Love Triangle

The middle part of the drama was marked by the appearance of variety show producing director (PD) Ji Sung Hyun (Lee Sang Yi), who was Yoon Hye Jin’s senior at university. But before Yoon Hye Jin and Ji Sung Hyun reunited, Ji Sung Hyun first developed a bromance with Hong Doo Shik after Hong Doo Shik guided him around town and saved him from falling off the pier.

When Ji Sung Hyun openly expressed interest in starting a romantic relationship with Yoon Hye Jin, Hong Doo Shik was thrown off his stride. Although Yoon Hye Jin was happy to see her senior again, her feelings for Hong Doo Shik continued to deepen as she took care of him while he was sick with a cold. Hong Doo Shik decided to ignore his own growing feelings out of the trauma that everyone he loves will eventually leave him, while Ji Sung Hyun finally gathered up the courage to confess to Yoon Hye Jin.

Stage 3: Official Couple Status

Confused about her feelings for Hong Doo Shik and Ji Sung Hyun’s confession, Yoon Hye Jin heads to Seoul for a girls’ night out with Pyo Mi Seon (Gong Min Jung). But everything in Seoul only reminds her more of Gongjin, and while standing in the rain, she recalls playing in the rain with Hong Doo Shik and comes to a realization about her heart. She races back to Gongjin to honestly confess her feelings to Hong Doo Shik on the pier at night, and he responds with a romantic kiss.

Before the couple can officially start their relationship, Yoon Hye Jin decides to clear things up with Ji Sung Hyun. Ji Sung Hyun immediately catches on that Hong Doo Shik is her new love interest, but decides to let Yoon Hye Jin go and wish the couple well. Meanwhile, Yoon Hye Jin and Hong Doo Shik try to hide their relationship from the rest of the Gongjin residents, with hilarious and painful results. The Gongjin residents, who weren’t born yesterday, realize what’s going on immediately and plot to keep the couple away from each other until they finally go public with their relationship.

Stage 4: The Past and the Future

After becoming an official couple, Hong Doo Shik and Yoon Hye Jin check off the items on Yoon Hye Jin’s “boyfriend bucket list,” like taking couple photos together and going on a shopping trip in Seoul. There is a brief moment of anxiety for Yoon Hye Jin as she worries that Hong Doo Shik might not approve of her lavish spending habits, but he soon shares that he was preparing a romantic surprise for her at the beach and that he likes her as she is. The couple get closer through events like celebrating Hong Doo Shik’s birthday and helping Geum Cheol (Yoon Seok Hyun) and Yoon Kyung (Kim Joo Yeon) at the birth of their new baby.

But it soon becomes obvious that there are two major questions for the couple: what happened to Hong Doo Shik in the past, and what will the two do about their future? Hong Doo Shik’s past is a secret to everyone, including the other Gongjin residents, but Yoon Hye Jin feels alienated by his continued secrecy. Although she is currently happy in Gongjin, she also urges Hong Doo Shik to think about a potential future together, including one in which she might return to Seoul. As Ji Sung Hyun’s show wraps up filming in Gongjin, it is also hinted that Hong Doo Shik’s past is darker than the village truly suspected.

The final episodes of “Hometown Cha-Cha-Cha” air on October 16 and 17.
