Watch: Lee Do Hyun And Im Soo Jung’s New Drama “Melancholia” Shares Behind-The-Scenes Look At 1st Filming
tvN has shared a look at the first filming for their upcoming drama “Melancholia”!
Set in a private school that is rife with corruption, “Melancholia” is a drama about a passionate math teacher named Ji Yoon Soo (Im Soo Jung) and a former math prodigy named Baek Seung Yoo (Lee Do Hyun) as they fight to overcome social conventions and prejudices together.
In the behind-the-scenes video, Im Soo Jung introduced her character as the math teacher at Ahseong High School. “The atmosphere was great from the first day of filming,” she said. “The actors have great chemistry and the director balanced us well. The cast got so quickly immersed into their characters that it made me excited for the rest of our work. We also became fast friends with the production staff.”
Lee Do Hyun said, “It’s been about one month… two months… a month and a half since my last project ended. It was quite a short break. When I had some time off, I kept thinking that I wanted to act more. That’s why I went to bed excited the night before our first day of filming. I said this to the director when we started filming, but it’s so much fun. I think it’s because I had such a hunger for acting, and had spent a lot of time preparing for this character, but I was really excited and happy to film.”
Jin Kyung plays Noh Jung Ah, the department head of academic affairs at Ahseong High School. She said, “The director is so full of love that the atmosphere on set is warm and affectionate and respectful. I was glad to be working with staff I’ve worked with before and all the cast members.”
Choi Dae Hoon plays Ryu Sung Jae, Ji Yoon Soo’s fiancé and a policy advisor at the Office of Education. He said, “The director is gentle and soft and the atmosphere on set is nice and comfortable. Im Soo Jung, who plays my fiancée, is a great partner, and Lee Do Hyun and I are alumni from the same school [Chung-Ang University].”
Im Soo Jung praised the cast for perfectly portraying their characters in the drama, and particularly complimented Lee Do Hyun’s synchronization with Baek Seung Yoo, which helped her get into character as well. Lee Do Hyun shared that he’d met Im Soo Jung once or twice before the script reading and that he’d discussed the drama with the director and writers and studied math with tutors to prepare for the role, but he’d met most of the other cast members at the reading or on set for the first time.
“Because of social distancing,” he added, and said, “But it felt good. There’s not a lot that Seung Yoo can do by himself. He doesn’t talk much, he doesn’t do much. But as I film with the other actors, the character gets built up more and more, and I can see more clearly the bigger picture of the drama.”
Im Soo Jung and Lee Do Hyun then took viewers behind the scene of their characters’ first fateful meeting on a train.
