Yoo Seung Ho, Hyeri, Byun Woo Seok, And Kang Mina Share Thoughts About 'Moonshine,' Acting In A Historical Drama, And More

On December 20, the cast and crew of “Moonshine” held an online press conference to talk about the upcoming drama.

“Moonshine” is a drama set in the Joseon era, during the time when prohibition laws were at their strongest. The series will tell the love story of Kang Ro Seo, a struggling aristocrat who starts illegally making alcohol in order to support her family (played by Hyeri), and Joseo’’s greatest inspector Nam Young, who is known for living a very principled life (played by Yoo Seung Ho).

Present at the press conference were Yoo Seung Ho, Hyeri, Byun Woo Seok, Kang Mina, and producing director (PD) Hwang In Hyuk.

Hwang In Hyuk commented, “‘Moonshine’ can be summarized as a story of four young people rebelling against taboos. I thought it would be fun to talk about youth who faced the big taboo of prohibition. I did my best to combine various genres so that [viewers] could follow the stories of the characters without being bored.”

This isn’t Yoo Seung Ho’s first historical drama. Some of his previous projects are “The Great Queen Seondeok” and “Warrior Baek Dong Soo.” The actor shared his thoughts on historical dramas, saying, “Historical dramas have their own charm. Compared to modern dramas, there’s a lot to prepare, and it’s true that it’s uncomfortable, but I’m a little bit addicted to it. I tried hard not to cause the drama trouble by using the data I accumulated while filming various historical dramas.”

Hyeri remarked, “When I first saw the title of the drama (‘Moonshine,’ also known as ‘When Flowers Bloom, I Think of the Moon’,) I thought it was very intense. It felt lyrical, so I wondered what the story was going to be about.” Laughing,  she added, “When I went into filming, there were many scenes where I was being chased and I was chasing [someone] as well as a lot of action and comedy moments. The [lyrical] side of the [drama] that is like the title can be felt in the friendship and story of youth.”

Byun Woo Seok plays Lee Pyo, who is tall, good-looking, and talented at both martial and fine arts, but has no taste for books or studying. He is a crown prince who shirks his duties, and being an alcoholic, frequently sneaks out of the palace to drink illegally.

Byun Woo Seok, who has experience with historical dramas due to his previous role in JTBC’s “Flower Crew: Joseon Marriage Agency,” stated, “I was happy and thrilled that my house got bigger because I play the role of the crown prince this time. I practiced a lot to express his slyness and rebelliousness.”

Kang Mina plays Han Ae Jin, the beloved only daughter of a high-ranking noble family. She grew up carefully cultivated like a flower, eating only the choicest foods and wearing only the choicest clothes. To her father, Han Sang Woon (Lee Hwang Eui), she is the apple of his eye. Growing up in this environment, she always got what she wanted and never had to do what she didn’t want to do. However, she has a lot of curiosity about the world outside her family home and has an unpredictable personality.

This is the first time Kang Mina is in a historical drama, and she shared, “I was worried about being in a historical drama, but I was led well by good actors, staff, director, and writer, so I was able to film comfortably. Han Ae Jin is a charming character who is unpredictable.”

Yoo Seung Ho made a viewership ratings promise, saying, “If the viewership ratings exceed 10 percent, the four of us (Yoo Seung Ho, Hyeri, Byun Woo Seok, and Kang Mina) will donate 4,000 briquettes to those in need.”

“Moonshine” premieres on December 20 at 9:30 p.m. KST and will be available on Viki.
