Ryu Jun Yeol Talks About His Photography Work, Upcoming Sci-Fi Film, And More

Ryu Jun Yeol recently took time for a photo shoot and interview with Esquire Korea.

During the interview, the actor commented on the filming process for his upcoming sci-fi film “Alien” (working title), which took over a year to film. Ryu Jun Yeol stated, “We kept filming almost without any rest. I really want to give people hints about this film, but this is the kind of film where it’s more fun if you go into it knowing nothing, which is probably why the production team is also being so careful.”

Ryu Jun Yeol also spoke about his latest drama “Lost,” mentioning that the script written by Kim Ji Hye was so well-written and delicate that it felt like each line contains the character’s soul. He then added that it was thanks to this amazing writing that he felt no pressure when acting and reading his lines.

When asked his thoughts on the drama’s concept, he responded, “If have to pick out a concept, then I would say that it’s truly just about the stories that go on around us. When I received the script for this drama, I sometimes got the thought that this is not like a film or drama but rather the true happenings of things around me. I even once told my own mom that one of the stories involving my character Kang Jae and his mother Mi Sun was actually about us.” He added, “The writer of the script had no idea. I had only met the writer a few times and never told her about this incident.”

Ryu Jun Yeol then went on to mention his travels and how he feels that the train stations of each country capture its essence. He commented on how many Japanese photographers have photographed Japan’s unique train stations over the years but that he has yet to see any photographs capturing the essence of train stations in Korea. He spoke about his favorite subway stations in Korea, mentioning examples such as Chungmuro Station, Sindorim Station, and Geumjeong Station.

Continuing on the topic of photography, he also talked about picking out photographs for his own exhibition last year. The actor stated, “The process of picking out the photographs was very fun but also really difficult. Photographer Jung Jung Ho also once stated how picking out photographs is a bigger task than actually taking them because even if I thought that this is definitely a good photograph, others might not feel the same.”

The actor also commented on how the viewer’s process of observing the exhibition, including which photograph they begin with and which order they decide to observe the images in, also plays a role in creating the sentiment they receive from the exhibition.

Ryu Jun Yeol’s full interview is available in the January 2022 issue of Esquire Korea.
