Warning: minor spoilers ahead

Somni: “Doom at Your Service

Have you ever imagined being in a relationship with an otherworldly being? I have, but I never imagined that being to be “doom.” “Doom at Your Service” introduces an unprecedented fantasy love story between the terminally-ill Tak Dong Kyung (Park Bo Young) and mysterious entity Myul Mang (Seo In Guk), who can make things vanish with his touch. Myul Mang appears in front of Dong Kyung when she wishes for something dangerous—to end the world— before she knows what condition lies behind her wish. Myul Mang, who was also in pain and misery himself, uses her to achieve his own goal. Ironically, the two, who wish for the end of the world, find hope and become eager to live more than anyone else in the world as they spend more time together. On top of this intriguing plot, the solid acting skills and ever-changing charms of the cast members add to the joy of watching this fantasy romance drama. Check out this drama to find out about the contract between Tak Dong Kyung and Myul Mang as well as how they find hope through each other!

Sehee: “Tale of the Nine-Tailed

Among the long list of fantasy romance K-dramas, one of my favorites is “Tale of the Nine-Tailed.” The drama tells the story of a male gumiho (mythical nine-tailed fox) named Lee Yeon (Lee Dong Wook) who has settled in the city and the fearless producing director named Nam Ji Ah (Jo Bo Ah) who is trying to find out the truth behind the disappearance of her parents. The gumiho appears commonly in this genre, yet this particular drama takes this legend to the next level. The drama emphasizes the inevitable and necessary bond between Lee Yeon and Nam Ji Ah, which pushes viewers to support the couple during their complicated journey. They are connected by their past and present, making their relationship complex and heartwarming.

Seyeon: “My Girlfriend Is a Gumiho

When it comes to romance with an otherworldly being, I confidently introduce one of my all-time favorites “My Girlfriend Is a Gumiho.” In the 2010 rom-com, Gumiho (Shin Min Ah) was sealed inside a painting for 500 years because of the rumor that she feeds on men’s livers. One day, college student Cha Dae Woong (Lee Seung Gi) visits the temple where the painting is stored and accidentally releases her. Running away from the temple frightened of what he had done, Dae Woong falls down and is seriously injured. Luckily, the Gumiho he released saves him by giving him her “fox bead.” Although she only feels gratitude for him at first, this gradually turns into love and also makes her want to become human. Besides the drama itself, the iconic soundtrack deserves a special mention, and especially “Losing My Mind” that was sung by Lee Seung Gi who became my first celebrity crush through this drama. Though the computer graphics may look a little awkward compared to recent dramas, I highly recommend this drama to every K-drama fan.

Winnie: “My Love From the Star

If you’re looking for a fantasy K-drama about falling in love with an otherworldly being, you should consider starting with “My Love From the Star.” It’s a (relatively) old but gold K-drama that first aired back in 2013. The story is about alien Do Min Joon (Kim Soo Hyun) who has been stuck on Earth since 1609 and meets the top actress Cheon Song Yi (Jun Ji Hyun) 400 years later. Although Do Min Joon has been alive for so long, he cannot stop himself from falling in love with his new neighbor Cheon Song Yi, who always brings him trouble. It’s definitely a must-watch series for every K-drama beginner, and I guarantee it will bring you both tears of joy and endless butterflies.

Ginny: “Hwayugi

Do you believe in destiny when it comes to love? I do, and if you also believe in destined love, you must watch “Hwayugi.” Jin Seon Mi (Oh Yeon Seo) runs a real estate business and has the ability to see spirits. Son Oh Gong (Lee Seung Gi) is trying to do good deeds in order to have his immortal status restored by Heaven, and he is put in the position where he must protect Seon Mi from supernatural forces. The two first met 25 years ago, and although Oh Gong erased Seon Mi’s memory about himself, they are still tied together by the deal they made back then. Destined to be together since they first met, they gradually fall for each other as they go through various circumstances and obstacles together. If you believe in true destined love, you must watch this series!

Sala: “My Roommate Is a Gumiho

A popular trope in fantasy romance K-dramas is love with an otherworldly being, which really heats up the romance with how the love story transcends time and reality, creating a romance that can only be called fated to be. One of my more recent favorite fantasy dramas is “My Roommate Is a Gumiho,” a rom-com about a 999-year-old male gumiho named Shin Woo Yeo (Jang Ki Yong) who moves in together with Lee Dam (Hyeri) after she accidentally swallows the magical bead that would have made him human. Even from the beginning, their relationship is very endearing as they become accustomed to living together, with Lee Dam affectionately referring to Shin Woo Yeo as her elder. Their relationship quickly progresses with the charming Shin Woo Yeo surprisingly finding himself growing enamored by the lovable Lee Dam. The fantasy elements only make their love more dire and meaningful as they have to race against time. In addition to the romance between the leads, Kang Han Na charms viewers as Yang Hye Sun, Shin Woo Yeo’s adorable former-gumiho friend who is adjusting to her new life as a human, and Go Kyung Pyo captivates in his special appearance as the charismatic spirit who watches over Shin Woo Yeo and Lee Dam, bringing an intriguing fantasy world to life.
