Two Korean films have been invited to screen at the 76th Cannes Film Festival!

On April 13, the historic French film festival announced its Official Selection for this year.

The upcoming noir film “Hopeless” (also known as “Hwaran”), which marks director Kim Chang Hoon’s feature film debut, will be screening in the Un Certain Regard section at this year’s festival. The film stars Song Joong Ki—who chose to appear in the film for no pay—as a mobster who becomes entangled with a teenager (Hong Sa Bin) who is desperate to escape his hellish hometown.

Meanwhile, director Kim Jee Woon’s upcoming film “Cobweb” will be screening Out of Competition. Song Kang Ho will star in the black comedy as an obsessive film director in the 1970’s who is struggling to complete his new movie, leading a star-studded cast that also includes Im Soo Jung, Jeon Yeo Been, f(x)’s Krystal, and Oh Jung Se.

Notably, Song Kang Ho made history last year when he became the first Korean male ever to win an acting award at the Cannes Film Festival (for his starring turn in “Broker”).

The 2023 Cannes Film Festival will take place from May 16 to 27.
