6 K-Dramas & Movies For Your Animal-Loving Soul

Are you one of those people whose heart melts at the sight of cute, furry, or not so furry four-legged creatures in K-dramas? Do you find yourself rooting for the animals, cheering along, and even shedding tears along the way? If the answer is yes, here are six K-dramas and movies which will resonate with your animal-loving soul.

My Heart Puppy

Min Soo’s (Yoo Yeon Seok’s) world revolves around his pet dog, a handsome and gentle golden retriever named Rooney. Min Soo is a shy and sensitive person, who literally comes alive when he is around Rooney. Rooney is not only his best friend but his family. However, the biggest hurdle in his and Rooney’s lives arrives when Min Soo’s fiancée Ah Min admits that she is allergic to dogs. Min Soo is in a dilemma: he cannot let go and live without Rooney, but he also loves Ah Min. He, along with his cousin Jin Gook (Cha Tae Hyun), set out to look for a good home for Rooney, and instead find themselves turning into caregivers for a motley crew of dogs and puppies.

“My Heart Puppy” is a sweet and endearing film, which has its paws and heart in the right place. It goes beyond the story of just a man and his best friend to also shed light on the plight of animals who are abandoned, abused, and neglected. Yoo Yeon Seok is at his cutest as Min Soo, and Rooney of course is the star of the show. “My Heart Puppy” will make you laugh, shed a tear, and clap with joy.

“Once Upon A Small Town”

When veterinarian Han Ji Yool (Chu Young Woo) is tricked by his grandfather into an interim relocation to the countryside and to practice at his clinic, he is rather displeased. Ji Yool tends to cats and dogs. He has never treated livestock or large animals. To add to his woes are the overtly friendly and inquisitive town folk who cross his boundaries. The town’s handy-woman is the ever efficient police officer Ahn Ja Young (Joy), a favorite amongst all. Ja Young’s congenial nature irks Han Ji Yool, who later realizes that she is the childhood bestie he had left behind. As Ji Yoo tends to cows, pigs, and even ends up adopting a litter of dogs, he has Ja Young helping him at every stage.

The appeal of “Once Upon A Small Town” lies in its sheer simplicity. It’s like a picture book about life in the countryside where a motley crew of people and animals co-exist, sharing their joys and sorrows. This show will keep you smiling from start to end and is something akin to popping a happy pill.

Noble, My Love

Lee Kang Hoon (Sung Hoon), the heir to an empire, manages to escape kidnappers but gets stabbed. It is Cha Yoon Seo (Kim Jae Kyung), a veterinarian, who tends to his wounds. Kang Hoon is so grateful to her that he wants to buy her a new clinic. But he also sees her as the perfect foil to ward off his mother’s constant matchmaking efforts. Between the woofs and meows, the two fall in love, but their divergent backgrounds are the hurdle in their happily ever after.

“Noble, My Love” is a cute drama. It is a no-fuss, straightforward story, and the chemistry between Sung Hoon and Kim Jae Kyung is electrifying and makes it worth the watch.

Hearty sets out to find her missing pup, but will Dong Wook be reunited with his favorite girl and her awesome brood?

The stars of the show are not the human actors but the cute labradors. A family watch for kids and adults, the film keeps up its momentum as you cheer Hearty on in her many adventures.

“Woof & Meow – Do You Love Me?”

When it comes to love, Ha Joon (Cha Hun) has practically no experience. The closest he has ever come to having a relationship is the bond he shares with his dog, Meongoo. He realizes that it’s high time he found himself a girlfriend, someone to spend his life with. He meets Do Hee (Yoon Chae Kyung), who reminds him of his first love. Do Hee is very attached to her cat Anna. The two, bound by their love for pets, form a bond, but is it good enough for a life-long relationship?

“Woof & Meow – Do You Love Me?” is a charming and light-hearted romantic comedy. It’s fun to watch the two leads navigate their feelings, both wishing it could be as uncomplicated as the love they share for animals.

Chicago Typewriter

Three strangers are mysteriously connected with each other. Han Se Joo (Yoo Ah In) is a well-known author and is dealing with writer’s block, especially with his next book. He discovers a typewriter, which takes him to his past life in the 1930s when Korea was under Japanese occupation. Yoo Jin Oh (Go Kyung Pyo) is a ghost writer who can help Se Joo with his book, but his services come at a cost. And Jeon Seol (Im Soo Jung) is a veterinarian who is also an obsessive reader. She, however, thinks Se Joo is not deserving of the praise that’s given to him, and she turns into his biggest anti-fan.

This is a drama which switches back and forth between the past and present. It packs in a lot, from love, friendship, betrayal, and how the history of a country shapes its people. With a taut narrative and pitch perfect performances, the animals in Jeon Seol’s clinic bring the much-needed respite.
