Jo Jung Suk Becomes A Lonely King With No One To Trust In “Captivating The King”

tvN’s drama “Captivating the King” has unveiled new stills ahead of its upcoming episode!

Penned by “The Crowned Clown” writer Kim Sun Deok, “Captivating the King” will tell the love story of King Yi In (Jo Jung Suk), a miserable monarch who feels empty inside despite his high position, and Kang Hee Soo (Shin Se Kyung), whose initial plot of revenge against him transforms into an unexpected attraction.

Spoilers

In the previous episode, following the sudden death of Yi In’s elder brother King Yi Sun (Choi Dae Hoon), Yi In ascended to the throne to survive in the treacherous palace where he couldn’t trust anyone. In the process, he resorted to harsh measures, including executing ruthless punishment to suppress political rival Kim Jong Bae (Jo Sung Ha) and cutting ties with his friend Kang Hee Soo (Shin Se Kyung), revealing a cruel side of his character that grips the audience.

The newly released stills depict King Yi In’s intense transformation as he becomes enemies with the regents and assumes the role of a ruthless dictator. Draped in royal robes, he now exudes a chilling demeanor, illustrating the loneliness experienced by a ruler navigating power struggles in a palace.

Amid accusations of pushing aside Yi Sun’s son and his own nephew Prince Mun Sung (Hong Joon Woo) to claim the throne, he faces public scrutiny. In one image where he sits alone engrossed in a game of baduk (go), Yi In’s heavy sighs and contemplative silence dominate the scene, underscoring the stark contrast between his harsh king’s exterior and his inner solitude.

Furthermore, other stills capture the presence of Dong Sang Goong (Park Ye Young) beside King Yi In, adding an element of intrigue. Previously summoned as a witness by Yi In amidst suspicions from the regents, Dong Sang Goong’s newfound favor as the keeper of the king’s secret raises questions about her future relationship with him.

The next episode of “Captivating the King” airs on February 3 at 9:20 p.m. KST.
