4 Heart-Aching Moments From Episodes 3-4 Of "Second Shot At Love"
After a slightly chaotic start, “Second Shot at Love” found its emotional footing and has begun to unravel the heartbreak, miscommunication, and unresolved feelings at the heart of Geum Ju (Girls’ Generation’s Sooyoung) and Ui Jun’s (Gong Myoung) story. This week’s episodes struck a balance between quietly devastating flashbacks and heartwarming moments. From forgotten kisses to overdue truths and unexpected romance, here are four heart-aching moments from episodes three and four of “Second Shot at Love.”
Warning: spoilers for episodes 3–4 ahead!
The forgotten kiss that changes everything
In one of the most heartbreaking flashbacks yet, “Second Shot at Love” peels back the layers of Geum Ju and Ui Jun’s almost-love story. The premiere episode already revealed that after graduating high school in Bochun, the two moved to Seoul for university, but somewhere along the way, their friendship fell apart. Now we know why.
In a college flashback, Geum Ju and Ui Jun drink heavily during a night out and end up kissing on the street. Ui Jun remembers it clearly, but Geum Ju doesn’t. Suffering an alcohol-induced blackout, she wakes up with no memory of what happened. To make matters worse, Ui Jun overhears her telling a friend the next day that they aren’t dating and that she only looks after him because “he has no one else.” Hurt and confused, he pulls away, believing her feelings are rooted in pity rather than love.
However, in a different flashback, possibly from the same day, Geum Ju slowly realizes, with a little help of her friend, that she has liked Ui Jun all along. The tragedy is that her realization comes just a little too late.
The cheating ex and the mistress
From the very beginning, Ui Jun doesn’t hold back when calling out Geum Ju’s drinking habits. So when she gets drunk after an emotional encounter with her ex in Seoul, he assumes she went to the city specifically to get drunk.
Later, after Geum Ju gets her wedding venue deposit refunded and takes Ui Jun shopping, he jokingly asks if she won the lottery. With a big smile, she tells him it’s the refund from her canceled wedding. But instead of being happy for her, as she expected, he becomes angry and asks if the people she hurt mean nothing to her. He remains unaware that she is silently carrying the weight of betrayal.
But the truth can not hide for long. In a recent episode, Ui Jun sees Geum Ju’s ex at the hospital with his pregnant mistress, and everything begins to make sense. The realization hits hard. He has been scolding her without understanding the depth of her pain. To make amends, he starts takes her side on multiple occasions, which will hopefully lead to a blooming romance.
The truth behind the wedding venue refund
Getting her wedding venue deposit back feels like a rare stroke of luck, and she celebrates with a carefree shopping spree. But the happiness is short-lived. After all Guem Ju went through, for a brief moment, she allows herself to feel joy.
While attending her sobriety center, she receives a message from the venue that reveals the refund wasn’t an act of kindness. In reality, her ex-fiancé is getting married at the same place, on the same day, to the woman he cheated on her with, and the refund was granted because of this special circumstance. The realization crushes her, and she ends up in Ui Jun’s arms once again, drunk and devastated. In her haze, she tells him something she later forgets.
While viewers may have expected a love confession, we learn that she says something even more vulnerable: she truly wants to quit drinking. Though she later forgets the moment due to another alcohol-induced blackout, Ui Jun remembers the pain in her voice and is determined to help her, no matter what it takes.
A second shot at romance for the second couple as well
While Geum Ju and Ui Jun’s complicated relationship takes center stage, the quiet love story between Seon Uk (Kang Hyung Suk) and Hyeon Ju (Jo Yoon Hee) has been steadily unfolding in the background. From the first episode, it is clear that Seon Uk has feelings for Geum Ju’s sister. What isn’t immediately obvious is how long he has been holding onto those feelings.
Hyeon Ju’s life is far from easy. She got pregnant after a night of drinking, married to save face, and later got divorced due to her drinking habits. While others see her only as a single mother who has lost her youthful charm, to Seon Uk, she is still the same girl he fell in love with all those years ago. In fact, he had been planning to propose to her years ago, but before he could, she gave him an invitation card to her wedding. Ouch.
All in all, it is refreshing to see a divorced single mom with two kids get her own second shot at love. This romance might be quiet, but no less heartwarming.
Now that Geum Ju has finally admitted that her drinking is a problem and taken the most important first step, acceptance, hopefully the coming episodes will focus on her journey toward healing, growth, and perhaps even a second chance at love, this time on her terms.
