"My Girlfriend Is The Man!" Original Webtoon Writer Discusses Drama Adaptation, Cast Members, And More
The original webtoon writer of “My Girlfriend is the Man!” has shared her excitement for the drama adaptation!
Just two days before the premiere of KBS2’s new Wednesday-Thursday drama “My Girlfriend is the Man!” the original webtoon creator Massstar expressed her excitement and anticipation in an interview and shared a congratulatory illustration.
Based on the popular webtoon of the same name, “My Girlfriend Is the Man!” is a romantic comedy about a college student whose girlfriend unexpectedly transforms into a man.
ASTRO’s Yoon San Ha stars as Park Yoon Jae, an astronomy student who is head over heels for his girlfriend Kim Ji Eun (OH MY GIRL’s Arin). Due to a gene that runs in her family, Kim Ji Eun suddenly turns into a handsome man (played by Yoo Jung Hoo) and begins going by the name Kim Ji Hoon. Chuu plays Kang Min Joo, a popular student who secretly has a crush on Park Yoon Jae.
When asked what inspired her to create “My Girlfriend is the Man!” the creator responded, “The initial idea for ‘My Girlfriend is the Man!’ began with a simple thought— ‘What if I suddenly turned into a man? How would the people around me react?’ I wanted the story to go beyond just the comedic situation of a gender swap and instead explore how people come to understand, grow with, and accept one another, ultimately telling a story about the many forms of love.”
She continued, “We go through life loving so many things, but I’ve always felt that the boundaries between them are quite ambiguous. I found myself wondering, ‘Loving nature, loving family or friends, loving a romantic partner—aren’t all of these equally precious and heartfelt? How can we really draw lines between them?’”
When asked how she felt upon hearing that Yoon San Ha, Arin, Yoo Jung Hoo, and Chuu were cast as the leads in “My Girlfriend is the Man!” she shared, “I was thrilled to hear that such wonderful and lovable actors would be bringing these roles to life. I think both fans of the original webtoon and new drama viewers will really enjoy watching them.”
Regarding the question of how well the actors match the original characters, Massstar said, “Yoon San Ha, Arin, and Yoo Jung Hoo are all very well-matched to their respective characters, which I believe will make the story even more immersive. The character Kang Min Joo (Chuu’s character), who appears as a rival between Yoon Jae and Ji Eun, is actually new and wasn’t in the original webtoon, so I’m personally very excited, and I think readers of the original will be curious as well. She seems like she’ll be an irresistibly charming rival, and I have no doubt that Chuu will portray her perfectly.”
Massstar also shared, “One of the highlights to watch for is how the bromance scenes between Yoon Jae and Ji Hoon from the original webtoon are portrayed in the drama. I hope viewers will empathize with Yoon Jae’s inner conflict—how he can’t help but love Ji Hoon, whether as a man or a woman—and with Ji Hoon’s efforts to be loved just as they are.”
“My Girlfriend is the Man!” premieres on July 23 at 9:50 p.m. KST and will be available to watch on Viki.
