Watch: Park Jung Min Investigates Mysterious Death Of His Mother Whose Face He Never Knew In Trailer For "The Ugly"
The upcoming film “The Ugly” has unveiled its first poster and trailer!
Directed by Yeon Sang Ho, “The Ugly” follows the story of Im Dong Hwan (Park Jung Min), the son of Im Young Gyu (Kwon Hae Hyo)—a blind man who has become a skilled seal artisan—as he investigates the mysterious death of his mother, whose body was secretly buried for the past 40 years. The film has been invited to screen in the Special Presentations section at the upcoming 50th Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF).
The newly released poster captures the silhouettes of young Im Young Gyu (also played by Park Jung Min), who struggles to make ends meet by selling handmade seals, and Jung Young Hee, a factory worker whose face remains hidden. Inside their silhouettes are scenes and people from the 1970s, creating an eerie and nostalgic atmosphere that hints at the film’s mysterious tone.
The teaser trailer offers a glimpse into the film’s dark and immersive story. Park Jung Min takes on his first dual role as both Im Dong Hwan and the young Im Young Gyu, while Kwon Hae Hyo delivers his first performance as a blind character. Im Young Gyu is portrayed as a determined artisan, crafting beautiful seals despite his blindness, while also raising his son alone.
The story takes a chilling turn when Dong Hwan is contacted by the police and sees the remains of his mother Jung Young Hee—a woman whose face neither he nor his father has ever seen. Her body, buried in a mountain for four decades, suggests the possibility of murder.
Determined to uncover the truth, Dong Hwan embarks on a journey to investigate her death. The appearances of Baek Joo Sang (Im Seong Jae), the CEO of the factory where Young Hee once worked, and Kim Soo Jin (Han Ji Hyun), a documentary producer seeking the truth behind the decades-old mystery, further builds anticipation about the hidden secrets from years ago.
