Star couple Cha In-pyo, left, and wife Shin Ae-ra donated 100 million won to Compassion Korea, a charity that helps children in Africa and Asia.

Celebrity couple Cha In-pyo and Shin Ae-ra early this month donated 100 million won to Compassion Korea (www.compassion.or.kr), a non-profit organization that supports impoverished children in Asia, Central and South America and Africa.

Compassion, one of the world’s ten largest relief organizations in the world, announced that the couple’s donation is the biggest sum of money among all the individual donations given to the organization.

Actress Shin, known as a devout Christian, has been working as a public relations ambassador for the organization and the couple have been given financial support to and exchanging letters with 10 malnourished children from Asia, Central and South America and Africa.

"I want to help as many children as possible as long as I am able," said Shin. "Although I am not able to take care of the children by myself, I wanted to help them through a credible relief organization. I hope not only our children but also all the children in the world can become happy, especially those who are in difficult conditions."

She also expressed her appreciation toward her husband, actor Cha. "I thank him very much as he always actively supports doing good-will activities," she said.

The couple is known for their good deeds. Late last year they adopted a one-month-old baby girl. The news came as a big surprise to Korean society where domestic adoption is still rare.

The two first met in the popular 1994 TV series "Sarangul Kudae Pumanae (Love In Your Arms)," while starring as a couple. While Cha has been actively pursuing his acting career since marriage, starring in various TV dramas such as "Hong Kong Express," "Heroic Age," and "Firework," Shin temporarily stopped her acting career for five years until last year, when she made a successful comeback to TV with "Bad Housewife," starring as a tough strong-headed housewife.
