BoA Poised to Burn the Floor

Apr.26, 2006

K-pop star BoA is to meet with the choreographer of the ballroom dancing smash hit “Burn the Floor,” Jason Gilkison. BoA will attend the opening of the musical at the Olympic Hall in Seoul’s Olympic Park and meet the choreographer after the show.

Gilkison was reportedly wowed by BoA’s dance moves and passed an invitation to the singer through her management firm SM Entertainment. He first saw BoA strut her stuff on TV in his hotel room in Japan during the musical’s run there. So taken was he that he requested videos of her performance through the singer’s handlers and then invited her to the show’s run in Korea.

“Burn the Floor” has been a hit in 16 countries and 74 cities. According to its producer Harley Medcalf, it was inspired by a group of ballroom dancers who performed at pop legend Elton John’s 50th birthday party in 1997.

Medcalf created a two-act high camp extravaganza in seven scenes that covers the popular dances of the last 300 years, from waltz to salsa via tango and jitterbug. The vibrant set pulses with passionate dancing and the powerful rock music, but the atmosphere is quite different from such spectacles as “Riverdance” and the like. Dazzling costumes come courtesy of Versace and Moschino.

The show brings together 36 dancers from Europe, the U.S., Australia, and Japan who have been at the summit of competitive dance. Added together, the troupe have no fewer than 100 professional titles between them. Anthony Van Laast and Jason Gilkison handled chorography. The show runs from April 26 to May 1.
