Super Junior Biography

▬2005

Our featured artist this week is Super Junior. After their official debut on November 6, 2005, Super Junior became one of the most popular and successful artists both in South Korea and amidst Korean pop music fans from all over the world in the sole span of two years. The 13 members of said SM Entertainment group are known for their different, individual skills as each of them specializes in various areas of the entertainment industry.

Prior to their debut, most members were (and still are) actors, MCs, DJs, or models. The group consists of (from oldest to youngest) leader Leeteuk, Heechul, Han Geng (or Hankyung, the only Chinese member found through SM’s casting in China), Yesung, Kangin, Shindong, Sungmin, Eunhyuk, Siwon, Donghae, Ryeowook, Kibum and Kyuhyun. Although the prospect of a large pop group may seem ridiculous at first sight, one of the strongest points that lead Super Junior to success is exactly their diversity within South Korea.

Even before their official debut, Super Junior had been arousing curiosity both in Korea and overseas, as the majority of the members had been training under SM Entertainment for several years (the longest being nearly six years). A large amount of rumours and speculation about who would’ve been part of the group constituted a hot topic, even when the group itself didn’t have an official name yet. So big was the interest that Korean fancafes, dedicated either to the group or an individual member, were founded way before the official debut date.

Originally born as a project group under the name of <Super Junior 05>, they released their first album in late. While widely promoting two of its tracks, Super Junior members were active and showcased their multiple talents both as a group and individually (including guest appearances on variety shows as well as their own TV and radio programs). All Super Junior members who were exposed the most proved themselves to be successful all-around entertainers.

The titletrack <TWINS (Knock out)> was the first single to be promoted from their debut album on Korean music shows. This track is the cover of a British hit song by hip-hop group Triple Eight, re-arranged by SM Entertainer song writers Yoo Youngjin and Yoo Hanjin into a powerful rock track with rap strings. The lyrics of the song describe the internal fight of contradicting feelings that overwhelm a man after a break up; although he’s lost his pride already, he’s determined to fight off the shadow in his heart, believing that he needs to go on with his life, as destiny will give him a brighter future after all the pain. <TWINS (Knock out)>, along with pop track <Show Me Your Love> (a Christmas-themed joint single with SM Korean group, and fellow friends, TVfXQ) was promoted from their debut date until the very beginning of January.

At the end of the year of their debut, their first full length album and their single with TVfXQ were both crowned as two of the top selling albums of 2005.

▬2006

As the beginning of February was approaching, Super Junior wrapped up their <TWINS (Knock out)> activities and began to promote a second track, <Miracle>. The group’s image went through the first 180 degree change in order to match a much lighter and livelier tune. When given the chance, the group also further promoted their album by presenting the audience with two more tracks: <차근차근 (Way for love)>, which is of the same genre as <Miracle>, and a ballad, <You are the one>.

On May 23, news on television announced Super Junior’s comeback with their first single, <U>; news articles also revealed the further addition of a 13th member, namely Cho Kyuhyun. It was commonly believed that Kyuhyun changed the precarious status of the group from project to formal, as announced on radio by leader Leeteuk. In fact, Super Junior finally started getting recognized as <Super Junior> only, after definitively taking out the suffix ‘05’ from their name.

The original Korean version of <U> consists of three tracks: <U>, <Endless moment> and <Lovely day>; the first two songs were both available for download online (on Super Junior’s official website) prior to the single release. In just a few days time 1.7 million downloads were registered and reported by official statistics. Shortly after, SM Entertainment’s server crashed.

Promotional activities of their first single lasted throughout the entire summer, and were by far the most fortunate step up in their career. Despite their undeniably ever growing popularity after just one album, it wasn’t until the release of <U> that the group began to earn their first well-deserved awards on weekly music shows, such as SBS Inkigayo and M.net M!Countdown.

Thanks to this hit (a dance beat with R&B influences and well-distributed rap parts), Super Junior caught the interest and hearts of many more fans by presenting a tougher and more mature image, in total contrast with their colourful teenage-like <Miracle> activities. After only one month of <U> activities, the group was finally crowned with success with five fairly consecutive wins collected on two notable music shows and the members realized their dream of being recognized as singers.

In the middle of already hectic activities, the usual yearly SM TOWN Summer compilation was released and, on July 23, Super Junior began to promote their own track from said album, <Dancing out>, as well as <U>, collecting two more awards along the way.

Not long after Super Junior’s Goodbye Special on SBS Inkigayo, SM Entertainment announced the first of a series of events that brought the group to where it currently is. The first sub-unit of the group was created and given the name <K.R.Y.> (based on the initial of the first name of its members: Kyuhyun, Ryeowook, Yesung) and they were designated to debut on November 5, 2006 on KBS Music Bank. Although Super Junior – K.R.Y. was never put out with a full length album, they recorded the theme songs of a minor drama (<하이에나 HYENA>) broadcasted on channel tvN, and two large-scale dramas that aired on SBS and MBC, respectively named <눈꽃 Snow flower> and <빌리진 날봐요 Billie Jean, Look at Me>. Super Junior – K.R.Y.’s focus was clearly set on ballads and they never failed to impress their fans with amazing live performances.

Finally, with a total of five well-deserved awards swept up at the end of the year Awards Ceremonies, Super Junior was blessed and confirmed as the Best New Group of 2006, beating other new groups such as Big Bang (a highly popular YG Entertainment group), Brown Eyed Girls and TYPHOON.

Meanwhile, Super Junior – K.R.Y. activities in original soundtracks sponsored by SM Entertainment were carried on, and Super Junior as a group saluted their fans with one last new track, <Tic! Toc!>, published on the annual SM TOWN Winter album.

▬2007

Despite a series of tragic events (as August saw both the loss of Donghae’s father and, on the same day, a car accident), Summer 2006 definitely determined the most successful moment in Super Junior’s career this far.

Upon seeing that Super Junior – K.R.Y. was widely accepted by the majority of ELF (Super Junior’s Fanclub), SM Entertainment took a further step and, at the beginning of the new year, a new sub-unit was formed. Leeteuk, Heechul (who made a comeback after recovering from the aforementioned car accident), Kangin, Shindong, Sungmin and Eunhyuk were grouped together and Super Junior – T was born and set to debut on February 25 on SBS Inkigayo.

Unlike the first, this second sub-unit recorded a single consisting of six tracks, three of which were instrumentals of the first three. Super Junior – T took a turn from their general style and focused on a modernized version of traditional Korean music, namely Trot (hence, the name “T”). This different side of the group caught the attention of older folks as well, also bringing fame to Super Junior as a whole thanks to collaborations with famous singer Bang Shiri, with whom they performed live. Super Junior were also praised and mentioned by other popular artists, such as Kim Janghoon and Kim Jongsuh.

Unfortunately, right in the middle of Super Junior – T activities and as the rest of the group’s members was just beginning to prepare for the recording of their second album (which had already been postponed due to the aforementioned car accident) four members of Super Junior were involved in a much more serious accident. On the night between April 18 and April 19, the van which members Leeteuk, Shindong, Eunhyuk, Kyuhyun and two managers were riding, was involved in a car accident. While Shindong and Eunhyuk suffered minor injuries and were discharged shortly after, Leeteuk and Kyuhyun spent a longer time in the hospital, causing Super Junior to halt all activities for a brief period of time.

Gradually, all members, excluding Kyuhyun (who was hospitalized until July 5), resumed their activities again at the beginning of May; firstly on radio shows, and then on television as well, also making their American fans’ dreams come true by taking part in the annual Hollywood Bowl concert held in Los Angeles. Furthermore, Super Junior released a Chinese version of their previous hit, <U> (which had been recorded prior to the accident) and travelled to Taiwan for an Awards Ceremony, where they proved their immense popularity once again.

July 2007 marked their definite return as a group thanks to the annual release of a Summer compilation by SM TOWN. As the year’s theme this time was that of famous remakes, Super Junior were designated to cover legendary Korean idol group H.O.T.’s <행복 (Full of happiness)>. Promotional activities began on July 5, with a performance on M.net M!Countdown and lasted for nearly two months, ending with a final performance at the 2007 M.net Summer Break 20’s Choice on August 21, where they swept up numerous awards, including <Best Group> and <Best Performance>.

In mid-July, SM Entertainment made the group follow the same path as some other boybands by releasing a movie starring all members. With the title <꽃미남 연쇄 테러 사건 (Attack On The Flower Boys)>, the first movie starring all Super Junior members (except Kyuhyun, who was unable to complete the filming of his scenes due to the accident and was thus replaced by a fellow member) was premiered on July 26. Although not particularly successful in movie theatres, <꽃.연.테.> earned itself six nominees at the 2007 Korea Movie Acting Awards held at Kyungjoo World Culture Expo Center on October 19, 2007.

Finally, after countless guesses and rumours, their much awaited second album was released on September 20; in order to gauge everyone’s interest, the actual album release was preceded by the online release of twenty-second promotional cellphone ringtones of all tracks and teaser images of each member.

Entitled <돈 돈!(Don’t Don)>, their second is actually their first full length album as a thirteen-member group; in fact, although light-heartedly opposed by worried fellow members, Kyuhyun insisted in taking part in it . The latter, upon having spent a little over two months in the hospital and receiving treatment even after getting discharged, had to undergo vocal training as well due to having been unable to sing for a considerably long span of time.)

The style of the album is generally that of pop, dance and ballads; the titletrack, however, is a powerful rock track with R&B influences and a bridge inclusive of a violin piece played by new SM trainee Henry. <돈 돈!(Don’t Don)> sends a strong message to folks: the title itself being a play on the word ‘돈’, which means ‘money’ in Korean, and the verb ‘돈다’ meaning ‘to go insane’ (written by one of SM Entertainment’s most active and influential composers: Yoo Youngjin). The lyrics deal with the hypocrisy of a corrupted world where money plays a role so big that men are subject to its unyielding power, yet they bravely want to make a better world for their posterities.

Super Junior’s comeback was met with great interest and support; all members showed a more mature style and much more confident vocal control, as well as a strong eagerness to prove folks that boy bands aren’t all about prejudices. Their second album debuted on sales chart at #1 spot on the day of its release and is still holding onto a steady place in the top 5. In the span of three days, <돈 돈!(Don’t Don)> made half Big Bang’s sales of a month and also beat other widely known artists such as Wheesung, Lee Sooyoung, Drunken Tiger and Shin Hyesung.

Their second album consists of a total of thirteen songs and a bonus track (the remake of a Christian song). Other curious mentions are <Disco Drive>, a track that differs completely from the general style of the album with its 80’s style tune, and <I am> for which members Leeteuk, Sungmin, Eunhyuk and Donghae wrote the lyrics. Songs by notable artists and songwriters such as Kim Johan, Kenzie and Hwan Sungje can be heard too. Furthermore, Eunhyuk wrote the lyrics and made his own rap parts in the majority of the tracks, also collaborating with Donghae in a couple of them. All in all, this much awaited second album did not disappoint and good sales prove the group’s further increasing fame and how they matured.

On November 5 and 9, two repackaged versions of <돈 돈!(Don’t Don)>, respectively a CD only version, and one inclusive of a DVD as well, were released (the first, complete of two completely new tracks, <마지막 승부(The girl is mine)> and <갈증(Original ver.)>, a remixed version of the latter and a newly recorded version of one of the original tracks, <Marry U>.)

Right after having marked their second year anniversary on the calendar, Super Junior performed their newly extracted single on M.net M!Countdown. <Marry U> is a much lighter themed ballad, a proposal at all effects, set to capture the hearts of their loyal fans. With their first live performance of it, the group demonstrated that they too can sing live, stressing on the fact that Super Junior is not a joke.

As the end of the year approaches once again, as a Super Junior fan, there are two things you may have at heart.

Firstly, the consequences and chaos created by a casually thrown in and badly presented announcement of a third sub-unit set to debut in China some time in 2008, with the additional presence of SM trainee Henry (and possibly a future addition to Super Junior). Super Junior – China, as this sub-unit would be called, aims at expanding in the Asian market.

Secondly, the yearly Awards Ceremonies, where Super Junior have been largely gaining nominations and are especially running up for <Best Male Group> against other big artists, namely: Big Bang, Epik High, SGwannabe and SS501.

All we have to do is wait.
