Gummy4Music + Lyrics: Kim Byung Hoon

Comments: Gummy scores her first No. 1 song on this chart with "I am sorry". This is the general consensus in Korea, the song having reached the top spots on M!Countdown, Inky Gayo Mutizen Award, and various internet charts. It is Gummy’s most successful song since "Losing Memory" on her 2nd album.

Score: 854
Genre: Pop / Dance

Jewelry5Original Song: Ingrid’s "One More Time" / Lyrics: M
Album: Jewelry Vol. 5 Track 3 Purchase this album
Watch: MV Live Performance
Comment: This is the representative track of Jewelry’s 5th album, "Kitchi Island." The group has reorganized itself to include Park Jung-ah, Seo In-young, Kim Eun-jung and rapper Ha Joo-yeon. The song is a remake of a dance track with an electronica sound. Shinhwa’s Lee Min-woo wrote the lyrics while hitmaker Park Geun-tae wrote the music. (credits to Arirang TV – Pops in Seoul)

3. (–) Mighty Mouth (feat. Yoon Eun Hye) – 사랑해 (I Love You)
Score: 799
Genre: Hip-Hop

MightymouthMusic + Lyrics: Lee Hyun Do
Album: Mighty Mouth digital single "I Love You"
Watch: MV Live Performance (feat. JJ)
Comment: This is the title track of Mighty Mouth’s single album, ‘I Love You.’ The debut song of new hip-hop duo Mighty Mouth, it has attracted extra attention for the fact that Joosuc, Lee Hyun-do and Yoon Eun-hye participated in it. Witty rapping by the youthful rappers 237 and Shorry J combines well with Yoon Eun-hye’s vocals for a positively spring-like song. (credits to Arirang TV – Pops in Seoul)

4. (+12) Nell – 기억을 걷는 시간 (Time Of Collecting My Memories)
Score: 753
Genre: Rock Ballad

Nell4Music + Lyrics: Kim Jong Wan
Album: Nell Vol. 4 Track 3 Purchase this album
Watch: MV Live Performance
Comment: Over the past few years, Nell have been the top K-Rock band in terms of record sales. Their latest album is no exception, and it has been on top of the album sales chart since its release. Nell’s popularity also continues to rise with more live performances in music shows. Like every other album, Nell have chosen a listener-friendly song as the album title song: "Time Of Collecting My Memories". Written by lead singer Kim Jong Wan, it is about the psychological state one is in after reminiscing the events spent with a loved one. Kim Jong Wan’s vocals and the emotions he brings into the song express the lyrics well.

5. (+1) Hwa Yobi – 남자는 모른다 (Men Don’t Know)
Score: 692
Genre: R&B Ballad

HwaYobi6Music: Lee Sang Joon / Lyrics: Hwa Yobi
Album: Hwa Yobi Vol. 6 Track 3 Purchase this album
Watch: MV Live Performance
Comment: Title song from Hwa Yobi’s 6th album "Sunshine". It marks the return of the singer after her vocal cord surgery. Hwa Yobi has always been highly regarded as one of the best female vocalists in Korea. This is perhaps the most listener-friendly song that Hwa Yobi has ever produced, and it has become one of her biggest hits with a big jump to No. 6 this week. The song is emotional enough to fit her vocals but not exaggerated. Hwa Yobi admits that she’s trying to appeal more to the masses now, and she’s more actively performing on gayo shows, which was a rare scene in the past. This is a highly recommended song.

6. (+1) SS501 – 데자뷰 (Deja Vu)
Score: 651
Genre: Pop Dance

SS501DejaVuMusic: Kim Tae Hyun
Album: SS501 2nd single Track 1 Purchase this album
Watch: MV Live Performance
Comment: Even though they may not be as well-known globally as DBSG, SS501 are one of the fastest rising boy bands in Korea. After spending most of last year exploring the Japanese market, the 5-member group are finally back in Korea, releasing this single album. The title song "Deja Vu" is a hot dance song with an addictive melody that fans will love.

Score: 622
Genre: Pop Dance

BabyBabyMusic + Lyrics: Hwang Sung Je

Comment: Hits keep coming for this 9-member girl group. SNSD have released a repackaged version of their 1st album. "Baby Baby" is the title song of this repackaged album. It is the new No. 1 song on M!Countdown this week. This is a mid-tempo cute dance song about the girls’ shy love confessions.

8. (-3) Park Hye Kyung – 사랑과 우정사이 (Between Love and Friendship)
Score: 615
Genre: Pop Ballad

ParkHyeKyungRemakeMusic + Lyrics: Oh Tae Ho
Album: Park Hye Kyung Remake Album "When A Woman Falls In Love" Track 3 Purchase this album
Watch: MV Live Performance
Comment: This is the representative track for Park Hye-kyung’s special remake album, ‘When a Woman Loves.’ It’s a re-interpretation in Park Hye-kyung’s unique musical way of Pinocchio’s hit, ‘Between Love & Friendship.’ A rich acoustic sound melds well with a husky while clear and elegant musical style, beckoning hazy memories. (credits to Arirang TV – Pops in Seoul)

9. (-5) Brown Eyed Girls – L.O.V.E.
Score: 533
Genre: Pop / Dance

BEGLoveMusic: Lee Min Soo / Lyrics: Kim Lee Na, Miryo
Album: Brown Eyed Girls single "With L.O.V.E." Track 2 Purchase this album
Watch: MV Live Performance
Comment: This is the representative song for the Brown-Eyed Girls’ mini album, ‘With LOVE Brown-Eyed Girls.’ Saintbinary, an esteemed musician in the electronica field, participated in the making of this electronica dance track. The love song, which is about confessing love, shows off the Brown-Eyed Girls’ undeniable charm. (credits to Arirang TV – Pops in Seoul)

10. (New) Lee Seung Ki – 다줄거야 (I’ll Give You All) *** HOT SHOT DEBUT ***
Score: 493
Genre: Pop Ballad

LeeSeungKiRemake2Music + Lyircs: Cho Gyu Man
Album: Lee Seung Ki 2nd remake album Track 1 Purchase this album
Watch: MV Live Performance
Comment: Title track from Lee Seung Ki’s 2nd remake album. Lee Seung Ki’s last remake album covered songs sungs by female artistes. This time, he covered songs previously sung by male artistes. "I’ll Give You All" was previously a hit song by singer-songwriter Cho Gyu Man.

11. (+12) Evan (feat. Sol Flower) – 울어도 괜찮아 (It’s okay if you cry)
Score: 447
Genre: Pop Ballad

Evan2Music: Nicols Brinck / Lyrics: Park Chun Hyo
Album: Evan Vol. 2 Track 1 Purchase this album
Watch: MV Live Performance
Comment: Ex Click-B member Evan (Yoo Ho Suk) surprised us with his solo debut song "Men…are unavoidable" last year. The urban jazz type of music was very refreshing to listen to. This time Evan continues this urban jazz sound with an even better song. Female R&B singer Sol Flower is featured in the song. Ever since the success of ERU’s "Black Glasses", we are seeing more songs from male singer featuring a female singer in parts of the song. In my opinion, this is the best song by a male solo artiste so far this year.

12. (New) Davichi – 슬픈다짐 (Sad Promise)
Score: 424
Genre: Pop / Dance

Davichi1Music: Park Hae Woon / Lyrics: Lee Sung Ho
Album: Davichi Vol. 1 Track 4 Purchase this album
Watch: MV Live Performance
Comment: Newcomer duo Davichi score their second top-20 hit with "Sad Promise". This song has a more up-tempo beat than their previous hit, "I Love You Even Though I Hate You". The remix version of this song is also released as a digital single. Davichi are currently performing the remix version on stage. The MV is a continuation of "I Love You Even Though I Hate You" and it still stars Lee Hyori and Lee Mi Yeon, along with Davichi.

13. (-2) Kim Jong Wook – 나쁜 남자 (Bad Man)
Score: 379
Genre: Pop Ballad

KimJongWook1Music: Cho Young Soo / Lyrics: Ahn Young Min
Album: Kim Jong Wook Vol. 1 Track 1 Purchase this album
Watch: MV: Part I, Part II, Part III Live Performance
Comment: This is the representative track for Kim Jong-wook’s 1st album, "For a Long Time." Kim Jong-wook’s delicate voice shines on this ballad, which is about an intense yearning for a former love. Han Eun-jung, Lee Beom-su, Gong Hyun-joo and other top stars give great performances that add to the poignancy of the music drama. (credits to Arirang TV – Pops in Seoul)

14. (-1) Kangta – 어느날 가슴이 말했다 (Eternity)
Score: 377
Genre: Pop Ballad

EternityMusic + Lyrics: Kangta
Album: Kangta Special Album "Eternity" Track 1 Purchase this album
Watch: MV Live Performance
Comment: It’s been three years since Kangta’s last solo album and "Eternity" is his final present for fans throughout Asia before he leaves for the army. The title track, Eternity, which is one of our biggest movers this week, was composed and written by Kangta himself. A pop ballad, this song is about how one suddenly remembers one’s past love and wants to tell her a story.

15. (-6) Ha Dong Kyun – 나비야 (Butterfly)
Score: 340
Genre: R&B Ballad

HaDongKyun2Music: Choi Kap Won + Soul Shop / Lyrics: Choi Kap Won
Album: Ha Dong Kyun Vol. 2 Track 5 Purchase this album
Watch: MV Live Performance
Comment: This is the representative track for Ha Dong-kyoon’s 2nd album, "Another Corner." A 90s-style ballad, it communicates the sadness of separation using a butterfly as a repeating symbol for a past lover. The gentle melody is layered with Ha Dong-kyoon’s voice, which conveys sadness in a very controlled way, making the song all the more special. (credits to Arirang TV – Pops in Seoul)

16. (+18) See Ya – 바보 (Fool) *** CO-BIGGEST MOVER OF THE WEEK ***
Score: 337
Genre: Pop

SeeYaFoolMusic: Cho Young Soo / Lyrics: Ahn Young Min
Album: Cho Young Soo All Star Vol. 2 Track 5 / See Ya digital single "Fool" Purchase this album
Watch: MV Live Performance
Comment: See Ya is another group which generates hit after hit. Their latest top- 20 song, "Fool", is from their producer Cho Young Soo’s All Star Vol. 2 album. This song is also released as a digital single. It is not even the title song of the All Star Vol. 2 album, but the popularity of See Ya makes it a hit after all. This fun house dance song is about a foolish woman who wishes for her ex-boyfriend to come back to her whenever she looks at her current boyfriend’s face, which resembles her ex-boyfriend’s.

17. (-2) Tae Yeon (SNSD) – 만약에 (If)
Score: 335

Comment: Featured in the OST of the KBS drama, "Hong Gil-dong," this is the first solo track by SNSD’s Tae-yeon. Her vocals are emotional and the ballad is sad. The music video was made with footage from the comical historical drama starring singer-turned-actress Sung Yu-ri, Kang Ji-hwan and Jang Geun-suk. (Credits to Arirang TV – Pops In Seoul)

Score: 329
Genre: Pop Ballad

KimDongRyul5 Music + Lyrics: Kim Dong Ryul
Album: Kim Dong Ryul Vol. 5 Track 5 Purchase this album
Watch: Live Performance
Comment: Second single from Kim Dong Ryul’s top selling 5th album, "Monologue". This song is more mainstream than the previous hit, "Let’s Start Over". Clazziquai’s Alex is featured in the song, and it has become popular since Alex sang a solo version on the TV show, "We Got Married".

19. (+18) Moon Hee Jun – Obsession *** CO-BIGGEST MOVER OF THE WEEK ***
Score: 303
Genre: Rock

ObsessionMusic + Lyrics: Moon Hee Jun
Album: Moon Hee Jun Special Album Track 1 Purchase this album
Watch: MV Live Performance
Comment: Moon Hee Jun released his first album since finishing his military duty. This title track is a rock song that is written and produced by the singer himself. "Obsession" was first intorduced in his "Return 1996" live concert. This week, we are seeing both Kangta and Hee Jun on the top 20 at the same time. It is the first time that has happened since the H.O.T days.

20. (-2) Namolla Family (feat. Tae In) – 너만 볼래 (Only Want To See You)
Score: 295
Genre: Pop / Hip-hop

NamollaFamilyMusic + Lyrics: Oh Se Wook
Album:
Namolla Family digital single "Only Want To See You" Track 1
Watch:
MV
Comment:
If you love mainstream style hip-hop song, you should like this song. This is such a sweet song to listen to. Perhaps we shouldn’t even classify this as a hip-hop song, as the rapping is not a big part of the song. Featured female vocalist Tae In really took over for most parts of this light-hearted song. The MV is being filmed in Japan.

BONUS TRACK:

Tae Sa Bi Ae (duet Typhoon’s Woo Jae) – 됐어
Genre: Pop Ballad

TopVoiceProject1Music: Shin Kwang Soo / Lyrics: Kim Sung Chae
Album: Top Voice Project One Digital Single Track 1
Watch: MV
Comment: This is usually the kind of songs that we overlook – a project digital single of lesser known singers. Tae Sa Bi Ae has been releasing digital singles since last year. Her voice is a perfect fit for sad ballads. We heard Typhoon’s Woo Jae singing a duet with his fellow group member Sol Bi, but this is a fresh try. Male-female duet ballads were a big success last year in k-pop. In 2008, we haven’t seen a hit of this kind yet. This song probably won’t become a big hit, but it is too good to ignore.
