Weekly Music Chart 2009 - July week 3

1. (–) Outsider – 외톨이 (Loner) *** 2 WEEKS NO. 1 ***
Score: 888
Genre: Hip-hop

Outsider2Music: Big Boy, MC Sniper / Lyrics: Outsider
Album: Outsider Vol. 2 Track 5 Purchase this album
Watch: MV Live Performance
Comment: Despite strong challenge from SNSD, Outsider’s "Loner" was able to hold on to the top spot for another week. He is the first non-mainstream hip-hop song to hit No. 1 since the inception of this chart, and certainly the first in many Korean charts in a long time. K-pop music is dominated by pop, dance, ballad, or R&B songs these days.  It is a refreshing change to see an artiste who many still considered underground to have a No. 1 song. This song with a good rhythm is written by Big Boy and MC Sniper. No wonder the style is very reminiscent of MC Sniper’s. Outsider is known as Korea’s fastest rapper, and he proves it in this song.  It features a 14-member orchestra, which is very unique for a hip-hop song. Congratulations to Outsider.

YESTERDAY ONCE MORE:
Park Jung Hyun & Yim Jae Bum – 사랑보다 깊은 상처 (Scar Deeper Than Love)
Genre: Pop Ballad

Album: Park Jung Hyun Vol. 1 (1998) Track 9 (duet version) / Yim Jae Bum Vol. 2 (1997) Track 3 (solo version)
Watch: MV (from MBC Drama "Sunflower") Live Performance
Comment: Last week on MNet’s M!Countdown, Park Jung Hyun performed this oldie with K.Will, bringing back a lot of memories and thus prompting me to feature this song here this week. This is perhaps one of the most beloved songs among k-pop singers – many singers have performed this song on their live concerts. You can also find this song on many albums. It was originally recorded as a solo version on Yim Jae Bum’s 2nd album in 1997. Then it was featured in the classic MBC drama "Sunflower". In 1998, this song became a male-female duet, recorded in promising rookie singer Park Jung Hyun’s debut album. Personally I like the duet version the best, mixing two very different voices together – Yim Jae Bum’s husky voice with Park Jung Hyun’s crystal clear voice.  One can feel the sadness of the lyrics when they sang this emotional song.
